Yo yo wassssup y'all!

Just picked up my '93 Maxima SE 5speed (black/black leather) today. She's in pristine condition, totally stock, got the ugly 15" SE alloys and the leather shift **** has unwrapped itself, but otherwise perfect shape!

Just wanna know, any problem areas I should be looking out for on this car? An the all-important question, what are the best bang-for-the-buck mods? I'll probably be looking into getting a newer set of wheels/tires first (most likely newer Maxima SE rims).

Alright, lay it on me!

sounds like a sweet car (black/black leather 93se 5spd)
I really recommend the FSTB from courtesy nissan; some guys on the 3rd gen bbs said it didn't make too much of a difference, but I think it did.
Also, the 97-99SE rims look sweet on it and so would a carbon fiber dash =)
check out my webpage for my pics of what I've done to my car since it was the same as yours before mods (click on the car down there and go the gallery and then mine)

Here are some sites on 3rd gen Maximas (and some other good info) to check out....

http://www.infoblvd.net/mario/nismo/3rdgenlinks.htm
http://www.kalebonline.com/maxima/
http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/9289/
http://web2.airmail.net/scutchen/max_faq/

2 main problem areas would be exhaust manifold studs and VTC assemblies (loud clicking).

Welcome to the club, and remember, modding is addictive!!

I have an occasional clicking noise upon initial startup. It goes away as soon as you drive it. It seems to be coming from the rear cylinders, I was thinking the hydraulic lifter was taking a bit long to spool up? Car's got 93K. what is the VTC assembly??

Improving your 3rd Gen

I will give you a good starting point for modifications. Some good modifications are the following:

Performance
* K&N conical airfilter (from Stillen)
OR
* The Place Racing Cold Air Intake (better than K&N)
* Cattman Performance Y-pipe
* Random Technology 2.5" high flow catalytic converter
* Greddy cat-back exhaust (Stillen)
* Short throw shifter (Stillen)
AND
* Lightened clutch and pressure plate (Stillen)
* Jim Wolf Technology turbo kit (custom done but well worth it)
* Jim Wolf Technology upgraded ECU
* Unorthodox Racing underdrive pulley

Handling
* KONI 3-way adjustable shocks and Intrax/H&R/Eibach springs
OR
* Tokico non-adjustable shocks
* Suspension Techniques front and rear sway bars (for 3rd Gen NOPI)

Call up the following people

NOPI 1-800-277-6674
Stillen 1-800-711-4128 Adam Hume
Random Technology 1-770-978-0264
The Place Racing 1-626-966-4888
Cattman Performance cattman@azstarnet.com or http://www.cattman.com
Level10 Transmissions http://www.levelten.com
Jim Wolf Technology http://www.jimwolftechnology.com
Unorthodox Racing http://www.unorthodoxracing.com

Call up Stillen and ask for Adam Hume (tell him you are from the Maxima BBS for discounts on all parts). I hope that this helps but let me know if you have any questions. Welcome aboard.

newbie questions

the ticking noise is caused by there not being much oil in the cylinders. when a sufficient amount of oil enters the cylinder, the ticking noise goes away. this happens when you don't drive your car for a couple days or long enough for the oil to drain out. just don't rev your engine when it's ticking.

the best cheap one-two combo for the maxima is 97-99 SE rims and intrax springs. the springs drop the car approx. 1.75" with is dope because the SE rims are only 16's so the larger drop tucks the wheels into the fenders better. it is sweet! you should also get new struts at the same time as the springs, to save about $130 for install.
