Grease inside axle boots

What kind of grease is inside the axle boots? One of the boots is split, and a greyish grease is coming out. Will any multipurpose grease work, or what have you guys used?

Stores have grease specifically for this. It's included in most boot kits

You need to rebuild the axle, the new boot should have grease with it. Its not a very difficult job, but does require an impact gun to get the axle bolt off. Adding grease is not the solution.

Just in the off-chance someone needs the grease by itself... it is available. Perhaps, one didn't install the boot tight enough on original replacement and it oozed out. Precision (NAPA and Oreilly I believe) has a part number for the cv shaft grease listed seperately. It's cheap enough. Do not use just any type of grease. Bad things later down the road. Ok. Bye.

thanks guys, yeah i have the axles off as I took off the tranny. The passenger side input boot is cracked, so should i just replace the entire axle or put on a new boot. Dunno if its worth the hundred bucks or so when they worked fine before I took the tranny off.
