Trade of the Century
Trade of the Century
Im am about to trade my Maxima for this MINT 95 240sx and money for a turbo kit. I also get to keep my wheels. The 240 is stock except for the exaust system and the intake. The wheels were painted jet black as well as the valve cover. The car was also lowerd to the ground my favorite aspect of the car. I was a little aprehensive about this but his car is valued way abouve mine excluding all the money ive spent on it. I added up everything I could remember excluding repairs and rims and tires(I now have 5 sets) and it came up to a little under $7000. I thought about it last night and more than anything I want to go fast. Im not saying it isnt possible in the Maxima but it will take more time and money than I have.
The car looks exactly like this but the wheels are black.

AM I CRAZY?

I only have one word for you.... TRAITOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
J/k. Go for it. 240sx are nice. Do you know which motor is stuffed in it? SR20DE or KA24DE? The KA is a torquey little motor. It just requires A LOT of air. I got my 02 Frontier with the that motor to do 115. Not bad for an automatic, and weighing more than my Maxima by 500 lbs. But the SR20DE has so many goodies.

Man I love my max but honestly its been hell. Ive had nothing but problems. I know I got a lemon. Plus there is nothing like a turbo. He has the KA motor. I would prob eventually swap it for the SR. All my freinds are telling me im crazy. But I have 197k and my vtc's are about to walk off the job. Slight oil leak, and some other minor annoyances. The 240's kbb value is a little over $6k, he does have 165k miles tho. thats how much I bought my max with. But it does have a more stable motor. AND its a 4 banger!! LESS GAS!!!!!! THis car handles like its on rails man. After driving it my car felt like a boat.
Either SR or KA can make tons of power. I've seen stock bottom ended KA24s putting down 550+hp on the dyno... built ones doing mid to high 600s... SRs can do the same, but of course you have to source and swap the engine as well as build it.
For the price the guy is asking, I'd do a THOROUGH search of that car to figure out why it's so cheap. a '95 is worth at least $4k as long as it's in decent shape and the mileage isn't nuts on it.
also raise the thing up a few inches.. a macpherson strut suspension dropped that low is only asking for trouble.

cool 240sx. rear drive, right? i personally like the look of 3rd gens better.. enjoy
i thought the max was originally more expensive then the 240

nope man. The last gen of 240sx is harder to come by than a 92-94 Maxima SE... heck they're harder to come by than a orignal Bright RED 3rd Gen.A lot of people want them because they are so close to the Sylvia body design. And the fact a SR20 has so many aftermarket parts.
But you can get a KA24DE motor to put out a lot like Matt said. JWT offers a lot of parts for either engine. Personally I like the KA better, but that was the motor I ever tinkered with. And I can tell you, feed that engine a lot of air, and it'll throw you in your seat. I had my old 90 D21 pickup running low 14's. That was with a custom Ram-air, exhaust, and a lightened body. And my new KA24DE puts down a lot more power than my old KA24E.

WOW. I would go for it. the only thing that I would worry about is finding out if there is anything wrong with it. take it to a shop and get under it and look to see if anything looks strange. drive it for a while, do a compresson test. the other thing I would say is to call your insurance company and see how much it will be to insure the 240. my driving record is as good as it can get and still I can pay what they want on some cars.
Well, do what ya want..I definitely would NOT do it myself, but I think the 240 is an extremely ugly car...if you do trade, I wouldn't spend the money on a turbo for atleast 6-12 months, and keep it around incase serious problems with the car arise.
The nice thing about the 240SX is, it's so cheap and easy to work on. I was at a tech session last night and just about every car being worked on was a 240SX, S13 or S14, with modified or unmodified engines. The only thing I'd be worried about if I were in your position is bent frames, bad body work, or warped heads. Everything else is pretty easy to fix.
I can find the gen prior easily. Heck, I know of 3 sitting in the local junkyard that the engine is fried, and the body is decent shape.
The last gen is so much harder, and expensive. It's like I reposted above. It's so close to the Sylvia's design, that everyone wants the body style. Plus, the engine bay is so much bigger than the previous gen.

Depending on your needs, I would take the 240sx, as long as there were no major problems with it.
By needs, I mean if you have to haul more than two adults or drive much in the snow, you would better off with the Maxima. The 240sx isn't a very good car in snow and the back seats are for small children only.
The s14 has tons of potential and it's a lot easier to mod than the Maxima. At least the parts and stuff are much easier to get. Not dirt cheap, but more available, anyway. There are lots of guys with SR20DET swaps or KA24DE-T set ups in the NW that can hand me my azz. Check out the local forum for information:

It would probably be a good place to look and get some ideas on the car and mods, since there are a crap load of drifters and wanna be drifters in Portland, Seattle and Vancouver, BC.

On word (well sort of) - RB26DETT. Do it if you want the powah. I was going to get a s13 but they are hard to find cheap up here plus I really was looking for one that needed an engine as I had the money for a RB25DET. Then my max went down and the funds with it. So now I may have a second gen RX-7 that needs very little. It's your decision and you're young. You can always find a maxima especially as the years go by they'll only get cheaper. One on eBay 92 VE sold for 900 in mint condition. If you do a engine swap in the s14 the value goes up by a hella lot. Make the right choice and see which will cost more in the long run. The max or the 240sx.

The S14 is a sexy car. It's simply sensuous straight from the factory. RWD. Great handling characteristics. What more could you ask for in a "driver's car"? The Maxima is also a fantastic car, but do the swap if it's feasible for your needs. I would if everything checked out ok.

Since I sold my S13 three years ago, I have been searching for an S14. It's too hard to find one decently priced. And I am too cheap to pay over Edmunds retail on anything.
Well I have the car now. Im going to Nissan tommarrow to get it checked out. If all is good Im going to finalized everything. I get to keep my wheels and all of my sound system. He even put a garret T3 in the trunk. He has no cat on the car and took the egr valve off. It has an Injen intake and he converted the fan to electric. It idles a tad ruff but not any worse than when my max is cold. It looks and rides good, just a little bumpy on hard braking. Im wondering if i can swap my cross drilled rotors and brake pads over? The braking systems look identical. I think Im going to stay with the KA and maybe later when I fall into some cash do the RB. Its going to be hard to be different with this car.

finding a good VE is hard, 240's are a dime a dozen around here

I would definitely do that trade.
I would look into turboing the stock ka because it's cheaper and you can get more power from it (especially torque). You could also do an s14 kouki (97-98) or s15 front end conversion.
Check out 240sxforums.com and ka-t.org.
Good luck

Maybe an s13 but not an s14.

Personally I wouldn't but that's because I have 3 kids a wife and I already have a RWD 4 seater, but mine has t-tops and a slightly larger motor underhood
I almost did buy a 240 a few years back, but I didn't want to pay 2k for it, me being the cheap ***** that I am.

I think finding a clean 240sx is somewhat tough because a lot of wanna be drifters smack them into things. The clean ones are usually more expensive. S13s are more common and generally not worth as much as a Maxima, especially a VE. The s14s are usually harder to find (I doubt they sold nearly as many of them as Maximas) and the few drifters there are put the nice ones at a premium.
Maximas are generally "adult owned" and a larger majority of them have been regularly serviced and treated with a little bit of dignity. Of course, a lot of that gets thrown out the window for those areas that salt the roads. From what I read from you guys, finding a rust-free car seems difficult for almost anything 10 years old or more.
well ive been lookin at 240s lately, not to buy just to look, like my maxima. it seems the 240 is the new civic.....but the s14s are still harder to find and i personally would have to have a great deal on hands to trade, seeing ive done so much to my maxima.
i just wanna see some pics of it.

There were probably only enough 240SXs made (or sold here rather) in 9 years to account for 3 entire years of Maxima production. Nissan killed the 240SX for the same reason Chevy killed the F-bodies: no one was buying them. Personally I'd ;love to find a 98 example to toy with...240SX that is.
i'm in a same boat as you are.....i'm about to purchase a 95 240sx se. paint is in mint condition - some oxidation esp in the spoiler but interior is in good condition! he's asking for $1700.
now, i'm not sure if i will keep the max.

Where did you find that at? Keep your max and grab the 240. That price is lower than I have seen wrecked S14s go for. If you don't want it, give me the info.

Now you pretty much helped me decide to get the 240.....hehehe.....thanks.

yeha i find 240's ALL THE TIME i have been looking for a VE 5 speed in good condition motor and body wise and ahvent found one....
yes, me and obeewon traded, problems and all! I hate stepping into someone else's shoes(and problems) but i couldnt pass it up; I guess we'll see where i take it from here. You guys can check out my homepage to see some of my former work/projects including my other 95 240sx.
PS: All in all, its a pretty fair trade. ve's vtc's arent any worse than the ka's timing chain nightmare
Thankfully, his is tight!
