Stripped crossmember thread

Ok, my crossmember was cracked so i picked one up at a salvage yard, and when i went to put it on, it was having trouble lining up on the front. I thought the bolt had already started, so i started turning it, but it looked crooked. To sum it up, the first part of my threading is messed up. My other bolt went in fine. Is there anything i can do to fix the problem? I have access to any type of welding equip possible, but want to know if i can fix my thread and it be reliable, it is a crossmember and i dont want it falling off. Thanks

Should be okay with a tap/die if only the 1st part was damaged.

Im new at the in depth mechanic stuff. I know what a tap is, but how would i go about doing that? Like take the bolt into a store and ask for a tap for it? What is a dye?
Thanks

tap rethreads the nut
die rethreads the bolt

if you're new at this maybe it's a good time to see someone who's familar with this.

So what size tap do i use. The bolt is 17mm but the 17mm tap looks way too big. There are also different thread patterns on the taps, like 13, 14, and most are 18. The threading looks really bad. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

IIRC, it's a 14mm x 1.5mm thread bolt.

take the bolt into a hardware/tool supply/autoparts store and tell them you need a tap and die for it...
use the die to repair the threads on the bolt, and the tap to repair the threads on the crossmember mount.

I had this same problem but I just retheaded it the way everyone said to. It's actually really easy to do.

I took the bolt to a bolt place and they told me the thread was 12mm x 1.5 but after trying a dye, i realized that was probably wrong. I just got back from ordering a new bolt, so what size tap should i use? Matt are you sure that it is 14 x 1.5? Thanks

Thanks, but i've taken it to tons of places, and no one seems to have the metric size to help me. I think I might just have to take my car to a shop and have it fixed; this sucks.
