A/C Freeze 12 question

has any one here used freeze 12 refrigerant. If so is it legal to purchase like R 134a? I have the R12 system AC and I want to use Freeze 12 but I dont know were to find it in NY whats your opinion on this stuff. Is it easier to convert to Freeze 12 or should I just get a R134A retrofit kit.?

In order to convert you'll need an HVAC cert IIRC. OTherwise you'll have to take it to a shop that charges the A/C to convert for R12 to R13a. What's wrong with your A/C? Maxima A/C's are very good IMO as it mine has been driven in SC for 13 years of it's existance.

Freeze 12 has never been approved for automotive use. It can be volatile and is not environmentally friendly. Which is why we lost the R12 in the first place. That being said... the previous owner used Freeze 12 in my 93. It was alright until it got into the 90's(couldn't keep up with the black paint). Checked the pressure for leaks in the system and found none. I'm going to flush it, evacuate it, change the drier, and use R134a. In all the cars I've changed over, I haven't heard any complaints. R12 only gets a few degrees colder and if your system is working properly you shouldn't notice.

How long ago was that? 30lbs of R12 should be costing over $600.(and why would you need 70lbs?)

While a 30lb cylinder of R134A is more like $200. Higher than it's been, but still relatively cheap.

R12 has hit $900 in some places for a legal container and we're hitting $325 for the R134a when bought in quantity

There are some replacements for r-134a.. like duracool.
They claim you can just drop in the stuff with r-134a and it is fully compatible.. I think, dont quote me on that.

First of all you have to figure out what is your problem? Big leak? slow leak? repair leak.... vacuum system... refill... there are lots of steps involved.
