I have a 2000 maxima ,,this happened to me twice before ,,on both occassions it fixed itself,,the second time i actually towed my car home ,,,if the key goes in no prblem then it maybe the swith behind the tumbler thats bad,,,if the key has a hard time to get in then the tumbler is bad,,the the tumbler is where all the groves on the key go into ,,,,the switch is actually behind the tumbler ,,,,,,u can buy a switch,,auto zone has it for $145 versus Bap Geon $44,,,,,,the dealer will,,well u know,,,

I've had this problem before and what I had to do was:

1) Push the shifter up hard to make sure that it is firmly in park.
2) Turn the wheel hard in the opposite direction that the wheels are turned (if the wheels are turned to the left, turn the wheel to the right) while turning the key.

I learned to never leave the wheel turned before turing off the car and to make sure not to mess with it while it is off so the wheel doesn't lock because it is such a pain in the *** to get the key to turn.

I know it's been said, but sounds like the perfect reason to finally put in that starter button (I'm gonna do it out of personal preference anyway and my ignition is just fine).
