ATTN: Nevin..LONG
i just had a halfway decent offer on my bimmer so now i'm actually going to look at maxs. 99% of the good ones in my area are auto and i remember you said your old auto vg was faster than your newer 5 speed vg. right so far?
my dad had an 89 with 375,000 miles which he traded for a 97 SE auto. the 89 was kind of quick but shifted kind of slow and wouldnt downshift when i stomped on it (both before and after the tranny rebuild). i'm wondering if it would be worth my while to get an auto (in good condition of course) and do intake, exhaust, stage I cams, tranny cooler and trans-go shift kit (along with stereo and suspension upgrades)? (i'd do the same stuff to a 5 speed but i'd have to wait for a while to find one in good condition)
as of right now i'm really undecided, but i know i dont want to break the auto tranny(which i'm sure i could do, plus i like to race people from redlights to and from school..plus i like to beat the buses home so i drive pretty damn fast almost all the time, oddly enough i still get 24MPG city!), but i'm kind of getting sick of having to shift (maybe its my bmw being so....unrefined, afterall it is an 86). it might be just time for a change.
anyway, i'm a pretty good manual driver (i suck at launching in a race and my 1-2 shift is iffy when i'm not really awake when driving to school)
i dont know, just looking for some overall advice on what to get. i can spend no more than $3k on the car and mods will come week to week (but i do have a cd deck and i get sweet deals on speakers and amps..i just bought a new sub[ma audio-maw615] and i have a hook up with a good mechanic so i can get most stuff installed cheap.)
sorry for rambling on so long, i probably sound like a fool.
thanks in advance

Hey Pat, sorry it took so long for me to reply. If I was in your situation I would probably get a 5-spd. It all depends on you. I hated driving auto. I used to race alot around town so the auto was a disadvantage. If you get a 5-spd, your max will be faster, you won't have to worry about expensive tranny repairs, your car won't feel sluggish off the line. If you are sick of driving stick and there's alot of stop & go traffic then I would suggest getting an auto. You could upgrade your auto tranny like I did and beat other 5-spd max's. It's mostly your own personal preference. I think the 5-spd max will save you more money compared to the auto. I suggest you test drive both an auto & 5-spd max. That should help you make your decision. Good luck finding a nice max.

anyway, thanks for replying.
how would i make an auto faster than the 5 speeds?
i've read some of the horror stories about the maxima auto trannys, but if you get a cooler and a shift kit it should be ok. i've driven exactly one 5 speed maxima and i didnt get to go even a little fast (this was before i bought my bmw and after the old bmw blew up). however, my dad did test drive one, 91 SE 5 speed with an almost dead clutch, rotten exhaust and a dead injector..he would smoke the tires like nothing else from a 2000 RPM clutch drop which makes me want one. i think whats making me want an auto is that my bmw has basically no real power band (redlines at 4500). its great fun at 3000RPM+ driving (especially drifting around corners in 2nd gear doin like 45) and my dad has an auto VQ which is plenty fast enough for me (i shift the auto as if it were an autostick [which a friend has on his new stratus.. good fun but sissified downshifts)
its still all up in the air because the a$$hole who was going to buy my car backed out today so i'm stuck for now.
sorry this was so long, thanks again for replying

Re: Re: ghetto!!!
Thanks maximaracer28.
Yeah, the track with you guys really pushed me over. I was so disappointed that I couldn't run stock times. I would consider using smaller wheels but my stock wheels are heavier than my 17" wheels. I would need to buy light-weight 15" wheels. I may decide to sell you my ghetto rims.. hehehe

Thinking of selling my 92 SE 5 spd.
Ryan has seen a couple pics.
138,000 miles, no mods.
Transmission was replaced about 100,000.
New, not rebuilt.
Let me know if you want to see some pics and I can e-mail them to you.
Probably going to keep it through summer.
