89 Maxima RIP... worth parting out?

Sadly, it appears that a dolt driver in Atlanta has killed my Maxima. Made a right turn from the left center lane and I just could not stop in time... This is an 89 5 speed with 162K miles on it - with some work, I *know* it would go another 100K easy. Dang, loved this car.

Okay, so GEICO is coming out to laugh at it sometime this week, might even hand me some pocket change. If I get 1K for it, it will be a miracle or I'll be stunned. The body is good all around with the exception of the front bumper, left fender and a slightly dinged driver's door. The engine is SOLID, 5 speed tranny is fine...

is it worth parting out this car? I've not done that before, so I have no idea if it is even worth the trouble.....

Comments welcome. Now I'm saving for a 2001+ SE 5/6 speed, silver with leather interior.... I sure hope business is good this year..

Funny story - now I'm driving a 96 4-Runner. My wife thinks I look 'cool' in it. Guys, how do you explain to a woman the difference between a Maxima and an underpowered SUV?

Well speaking of underpowered.... if you are going to buy a 5gen maxima you need to get a 02-03 because then you will get the 3.5 engine. My dad just got a 3.5 maxima and they are awesome cars.

As for parting it out it depends on how much it costs you... because if the insurance totals it then you would have to buy it from them to part it out.

This is not always true when it comes to the other guy's insurance company. Last time somebody rear-ended me, the other insurance company simply cut me a check for estimated damage (even though it was above the "totaled" threshold). A few junkyard parts later and some green left, I had my vehicle back up and running.

If this is the case - there are plenty of VG/auto owners that would love to take that 5sp off your hands.

When I had mine stolen, the insurance company wrote me a check and totaled it when I got it back, said I could buy it back for $100 but had to get a salvaged title. And they forgot to charge me And I'm still driving it today...

they probably deducted the $100 from an initial estimate and then gave you the rest since they were already cutting the check as rasheed wallace would say.
