need help for a friend

i got a friend here in okc that needs help with her car. i'm going to look at it tonight but i was hoping that by giving you her description of what's happening could help me out. i don't know crap about 3rd gens and just a little bit more than auto's. so here it is

sometimes it wont let me reverse, its hard to shift it into drive (its an automatic) and sometimes it wont even get over 35 mph without going to 6000 rpm :-s i think its my transmission and i need someone to look at it before i take it to a shop

anybody have a guess as to what it is?
thanks

ok i looked at the car. the trans fluid was not low but it did look a little burned. we are going to get everything to do a flush real soon. my question is that when i had my 95 and had tranny problem i never had a problem with my car missing a gear like my friend is with her reverse. it kind of boggles me. so i guess we will try the tranny flush and see what happens

It could be shift linkage bushings. there are two nylon bushings one at both ends of the cable. The one below the shifter is accessed from above the cat. convertor heat shield. the other is easily checked where the cable meets the tranny, there is a metal clip that hold the cable on.

note: do not adjust the length of the cable, replacing the bushing will get the cable to its proper length. Also they only cost about $5 for both of them.

do not flush the tranny if it has not been flush before,

if you flush the tranny you are going to get your self into trouble,

so i would recommend a drain and fill instead the flush,

you forgot to tell us how many miles is on the car, the model and the year,

What is wrong with doing a flush? I was told not to flush my rad. because it might "force" a leak... which is total bs. If the rad can't handle a flush, i wouldn't want to drive the car. Just wondering if this is similar to your reason for not doing a tranny flush. If the trans can't handle a flush, is it really fit to be on the road?
