vaccum canister?

vaccum canister?
I remember reading about someone saying they had a vacuum leak in the black canister near the driver side, which I thought was the evaporative canister, but looking at Haynes, I know is not. I have been hearing a hissing sound for about a while now (maybe even since I got the car in Feb) and the car seemed somewhat sluggish, but nothing unbearable, so I never really poked or prodded, but after reading that post I decided to check it and low and behold, the 2 lines going into it were not connected, The ends were ripped and cracked. I cut the lines down a bit and reconnected. Heres my question guys:
Is there a wrong way and right way to connect the lines? I just popped them on to the canister. One line has what looks like a filter of soughts on it, while the other does not.
Since reattaching the lines, the car seems to have better pickup and drive smoother, maybe it's all in my head.
Thanks for the help guys.
