Transmission Problem: Auto slipped out of gear

I have an auto tranny, all stock, never had really any problems with it until 2 days ago when I pulled out after being stationary for a while and noticed I had no low end power in drive. It was accelerating so slow I knew something was wrong. When I got home I was trying to figure out the problem and noticed that when I put it in reverse it didnt move at all, even with a little gas. So by this time I knew it was a transmission problem.

With the car in park and giving it throttle the car would actually lurch forward slightly but never really move and the car would not move at all in Low gear(1). So I'm just casually messing around with it still in the driveway and I have it in reverse and with a little gas (not reving it high at all) the car jumps back into gear and I go flying backwards. Luckily I have a big empty driveway. So now the car is working like it should but what the hell happened? Anyone have anything like this happen to them? I am still gonna have a transmission shop look at it but it still boggles me to know what could have done it because I sure didn't mess with anything.

your tranny is probably at its end. you can try doing a drain/fill on the tranny fluid. don't drive it hard.

Also try adding the lucas transmission fix stuff...

I agree though about the electrical connecters since it doesnt make sense that all of a sudden it engaged and then works fine in all gears since, unless maybe the toruqe is acting up...

check the fluid and see if it is burnt up any though.

I got a similar transmission a couple weeks ago, after the car had been parked outside for a month. Then last night, it happened again. The car had ben parked for 24 hours. I noticed that in park, it was OK. No apparent problem. Then I shifted in reverse and the engine stalled. I restarted, then put the lever in drive. The car was almost stalling so I give some gas, with the handbrake on. I also noticed that the Idle speed was going from 6-7 hundred RPM to perhaps 1500 repeateadly. I took a chance to go on the road and drove 25-30 miles, going through the gears automatically and sometimes manually via 1, 2 etc. with overdrive oN/Off, and also playing with the Comfort/Power button. Can anyone shed some light on this?

every other alex will suggest dropit and shell 2k$ ... "we all know now it wont be that straight forward..."

The problem sounds like hydraulics; hopefully only stuck Line pressure valve. I would check TCU pin1 that it gets ctrl >0.5V when problem becomes acute...maybe open solenoid assy and why not then install the valve upgrade kit.

My first Tranny was doing that and it ended up actually being the Torque Converter. Was it making any wierd noises at the time?

I say run a diagnostic check on the tranny. Thank Craig the man Brace for this Tranny diagnostic....I also suggest not doing a flush on it unless you have been flushing it on a regular basis before hand. Sometimes it can hinder the tranny thats been neglected for years. Cant explain why but I doubt I am the only person that will say this.
Just trying to help

you are correct. flushing a trans with very old or burnt fluid can kill it. the new fluid is kind of a shock and takes out the clutch linings.

Yeah don't flush it if it hasn't been done by you before! 85% of the time it'll just cause more trouble than good. I'm not sure why, but I heard that it'll loosen alot of crud and metal slivers that will clog everything up and cause alot of problems

The flush could cause mentioned problems, but cannot see what bad fluid swap would do.
