you have to remove the top half of the rear seat..

now remove the 3rd brake light, then pull the rear deck cover out of the car.

your speakers are now exposed and ready for removal.

How do you take the top off of the rear seat? Are they secured by bolts?

Yeah I think there are four bolts, two behind the armrest and and think one near the bottom corner of left and right side. You might have to remove the base of the seat to get to the bottom two. You can get detailed instructions from crutchfield if you can't figure it out. Also make sure you have a screwdriver with the angled head or else you will have a hard time getting to the back screws on both speakers.

What I did was just remove the bottom first which pulls out straight up. Then I pulled the top upwards without unbolting the 2 bolts behind the armrest. Once that is pulled forward you can then just pull out the 3rd brake light, like Matt said. Then I just bent the back deck upwards and I could get the snake screw driver in.

I don't know how 6x9's will fit, but I got 6½'s for it. They fit like a glove!

Cool, thanks! Does anyone know how to fit 6x9's in the rear of a non-bose 1990 maxima? Thanks!

You might have to actually do some cutting, I have 6.5S which I bought five years ago, now they have the opening listed as a 6 and 3/4 which is a new size they have started making recently. You might want to try calling crutchfield, they have a tollfree number which you could get on their website, they would tell you if they will fit without cutting. CS

Uhhh, actually the 6.5S has been around for over 10 years.

In order to mount 6x9, you've either got to do some cutting on the rear deck, or mount them from underneath. another thing you can do is remove the OEM grilles from the rear deck once you have it off (they unscrew from the back).. cut a hole for the 6x9 in the rear deck cover, and they should fit right in after that.. be sure to stuff some foam between the cover and the metal on the rear deck though.. otherwise you'll end up with buzzes, rattles, and poor bass response.

Thanks for the help. If I mount them by just cutting a hole in the rear deck cover, won't the hole in the rear deck still be too small to mount the speakers? (I don't understand?)

Sorry guys, but I had to interject here. I believe that he's being misled. If I misunderstood the postings, forgive me. Here's the solution I would offer, as I've done this about 4 months ago.
The rear seat is secured by plastic clip things that can be pulled. You can remove the rear shelf package w/ only a flathead and phillips screwdriver.
Take of the side trip pieces by prying w/ the flathead. Be careful not to mess up the carpet/ padding. Slide it down the seatbelt about half way. Grab the back of the rear seat with a firm hand and pull in an upward/ outward motion. You'll see the stake that secured it. I belive there are 4 altogether. Take the plastic clips off the side of the 3rd brake light w/ the phillips. Twist the light off with a right hand (clockwise) twist. The shelf then slides out. You can then do anything you want at this point.
If you intend to mount 6x9's I suggest you get the plastic brackets from another Max at your local salvage yard. They are bottom mount units. Screw your speakers into the mounts and the mounts into rear deck. There are plastic clips that snap in place and they only go in one orientation. Good luck. Sorry if I stepped on anyone's toes.

Thanks for all the great input. I tried to take the seats off and they did just pop out of these plastic clips. I think Im going to go with cutting new holes - Ill let you know how it turns out. Thanks!
