in the matter of master & slave cylinders
now that the board seems fairly split if my problem is my clutch or my tranny,
http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=433661
i figure i direct my attention to the master and slave cylinders...i replaced them less than a year ago with autozone replacements and the feel was never the same. yes i bled the hell out of them. but the throw just seemed looser and not as tight
is there an aftermarket for clutch hydraulics? or should i have just gone OEM since the originals lasted this long?

have you checked to see if the slave is moving when the pedal is pressed to the floor
there may be nothing wrong with them
if your getting a bad grinding noise when you press the clutch in it would be the throwout bearing
i would suggest testing the hydrolics and if seem fine drop the trans and see if its the TOB or somthing else

for whatever it's worth. i replaced the stock master and slave cylinder a few months back and the travel and throw of them didn't match the OEM units....turns out they were the main source of my problem

well, no..not yet...i just ordered the master and slave cylinders from pinnacle nissan....should be here in a few days...but when my friend manually actuated the shift fork, shifting was nice and smooth like butta!!
it turned out the clutch hydaulics were not pushing the fork far enough. i bled the system again and no change.
i'll report back after the oem pieces come in

oem units are in as well as the technafit ss clutch line from good ol' Matt.
freakin awesome. the line made a huge difference to the feel of the pedal but the oem cylinders really improved shift quality. right now the only remaining problem is the slight difficulty into first gear and the obvious t/o bearing noise.
thanks again to everyone for ur help
btw...pinnacle nissan's prices on both cylinders were about $100 cheaper than local dealers (it was just too bad that whoever was doing the actually shipping apparently went on vacation to get married and my parts were sitting on his desk for over a week. was a little surprised that when they finally did find the parts that they weren't expedited and that no other efforts were made at some kind of customer service...but hey, i got them right?)

i considered this for some time as i was waiting for the oem unit to come in, but the aftermarket unit just didn't seem to hold the adjustment all too well...there was certainly a defect somewhere....i just didn't want to bother chasing it. u also figure 15 years should be due time to replace hydraulic parts...these are just one of those parts that i wouldn't go aftermarket (anymore at aleast) - too much of a domino effect of things that can go wrong
