94 Transmission warmup problem

My 94 maxima GXE with 100K miles has developed a problem over the last couple of days. In the AM after driving the car for about 1/2 mile, I come to a stop and the car dies because the auto transmission stays in a high gear.
After this, tranny shifts are eratic until warmed up (2-3 minutes) and then all is well.
After this the car sits idle all day and I do not have similar problems in the evening.
Fluid level is OK - ATF is a bit dirty but smells and feels OK.
Anyone had this problem? Mechanical or electrical?
Thanks.

take a look at this
if your tack gauge kinda starts to idle funny, like 1000 then 1400 then 1000 then 14000. you get the idea. and its doing that in the morning, my guess is its the transmission starting to fade. see mine in the morning if i dont let it warm up or just for about 1 min it kinda feels like the fuel is being barely pushed through at first then it goes fast. like people driving 5 speeds for the first time you know the old brake to hard and gas to hard. thats what it feels like. i cant figure that one out at all. but to me if i were you i would ask someone from a tranmission place to let it sit at there shop in the morning and cold start it and drive it for about 2 miles and let them see what they think. but my guess is premature tranmission failure. my 89 did it. well let me know.
