temp went to High and smoke

I took my husband to work this morning and on my way home, I noticed there was smoke coming out of the hood by the passenger side and as I drove along, the smoke intensify and the temp went all the way to High. I assumed this has to do with the radiator. We started noticing problem as our heater doesn't come on at all out of sudden and saw one of the hose, not the main hose, actually cracked and letting out steam and today, it finally burst! We looked at the Chilton manual, and all it says is a water hose. Can we get it at Schucks and replace it on our own?

Thanks in advance.

Where is the hose located in the engine compartment??? [i.e. behind engine by the firewall/ passenger side by belts..etc.]

I am guessing its the one behind the engine....If it is then schucks has both of them for $8.59

You must have an air plug (a big nasty bubble of air which does not want to let water flow around the system). Need to drain antifreeze, fix the hose, that you are better off getting from a scrap yard, and then refill the system with antifreeze, monitoring temperature of air, coming out of the ducts. There is a bleeder screw on top of the engine, that has to be taken out before pouring antifreeze into the radiator cap. Once antifreeze show up from the hole where the screw was, you put the screw back in. Make sure the ducts blow hot air.

It's the hose from the water pump outlet to the top of the engine. Do we need to remove the pulley and etc or it is easy enough to DIY?

Thank you guys.

A thought is crawling into the back of my mind: is that a hose between the engine and the firewall? That would be feeding heater core with water, it bursting means that your thermostat is stuck closed, IMHO.

it is the bypass hose. looks like a flatten 'U" shape? You can replace it easily.
Schuchs has it for about $18
replace your thermal stat, it could be bad.
good luck.

Just replace the hose and refill the system. THEN see if anything else is broken.

the car is over ten years old. it's very likely the hose just burst due to old age. I see it all the time.

and DO NOT get a used hose from a junkyard. that would be stupid. they're not that expensive to buy new, and buying one from a junkayrd is just rolling the dice.

Thank you for your all your help guys. We'll go get the hose from Schucks and replace that and fill up and hopefully that's it. Do we also need to buy new clamps as well or just the hose?

Yes, you need new clamps.

Listen to Matt, you really should not buy a used hose. I thought of buying a used one for 5 bucks to test and see why it broke, but if you bleed air proprerly, it should never happen again.

Reuse the old clamps if they are not visibly broken.
