I also am about to change out my radiator due to a hairline crack at the top. I didn't even know they had performance radiators, but I'm currently looking into a new or used 3rd gen radiator both in the classifieds forum and outside.
Does anyone know of any write-ups and tools necessary to do this job?
Does the coolant have to be completely flushed from the car?
Are there required/recommended tools for the job?

Also, is it true that it is more difficult to swap a radiator than it is an alternator?

Thanks!

pics of turbo set up?

the stock radiator is fine. even the Z32 guys trade up to it. you can get a Koyo..but it's a factory replacement...for the all alum radiators...forget it.

remove fans
drain coolant
remove upper and lower hoses
remove ATF cooler lines (if so equipped)
remove 2 radiator brackets

When removing the ATF cooler lines have two BIC 'stick medium' pens ready to plug the hoses to prevent loss of ATF. My 2c.

im almost done getting the motor in the car, ill post up some pics soon, maybe next week. im in the middle of getting a custom fuel rail done, and a new intake manifold and plenuim done. so after they are finished ill have the engine in. and ill post up some pics. i think i may have a few from b4 i took out the engine.

my setup is a new garrett GT35R dual ball bearing turbo, tial waiste gate, and bov. front mount is 12 x 8 x 3. im getting my axles done when driveshaftshop.com is done with there move.
im still looking for stand alones, but i have one in mind, its a mega-squirt. my friend has the set up in his eclipse, and it rips, i think on stock turbo like 280 to the wheels at 19 lb's or 20 lb's. its quick.

i just want one of those radiators that are smaller, and take up half the space... i think i saw a koyo or fluidyne. just wondering if anyone know where to get them. they cool more, and take up less space. well thanks for the help
pic's ell be up soon

stop looking at honduh info
The change to aluminum is for weight savings, our stock ones are normally aluminum and plastic which weighs less than an all aluminumradiator anyhow

the stock radiator has a rather large cooling reserve

and I'd much rather have a 24" radiator with 2 rows than a 12" with 4

You put the turbo in the wrong place if you need a new radiator. Other wise sounds like a sweet project. beefed up axles, injectors and rail....sounds good too me.

To answer Honker24's question. You don't "Need" to drain the the entire coolant system, although I would recomend doing it. You just need to do as Danny and Tarzan mentioned. Take note of Tarzans comment. I recently took out my radiator to take it to a repair shop and I didn't think much of the atf (automatic transmission fluid) lines and I must have lost a quart of fluid by the time I realized it was leaking all over the place. The job itself is fairly simple and straight forward.

Thread necromancy!

Quick question, where are the Automatic Transmission Fluid lines on the radiator located? Is it correct for me to assume that there are two?

they are kinda on the fdrivers side of the radiator.... there are two... just look for two lines that come off of the front of the tranny and go to the radiator... half of the hose is metal.. the other half is rubber......pretty simple

Cool man, thanks for saving me some transmission fluid.
Did you have to completely swap out the entire sideview mirrors for the heated mirrors modification you did, or were you able to hang onto the originals?

just change it any way. your auto box will need it, most people think tranny fluid lasts forever. compared to other fluids it can go longer, but it does need to be changed. a 60K mile interval would help alot of trannys last alot longer.

i went to the junk yard and got a set of heated mirrors off of a GXE (dont know what year) pulled the GXE mirrors apart and took out the glass...swap everything inside the GXE mirror into your other mirror... i had to cut the wires t o get the plug through the hole......(only 2 i think)......inside the door there should be a place to plug them in.....make sure you get the heated mirror switch..... luckily there is already wires run to the switch... so you dont have to run any wires..i have a passenger side heated mirror if u need one (only passenger and it is only he mirror with the heat.. no brackets)

it takes about 15 seconds for the fog to clear of of the mirror and even while driving down a rainy road.... it keeps the mirrirs pretty dry.. so you can see out of them./. i havent goten to use them in the winter yet... (car broken)

The heated sideview mirror mod sounds interesting, I'll look further into the luxury mods once I finish with my needed maintenance.
Regarding that, I'm having a hell of a hard time trying to get these automatic transmission fluid hoses onto this new radiator. Even with the clamp fully removed from them, I can only get a quarter of it onto it's pipe. Does anyone know of any tricks or suggestions for this?

Thanks

tweak gently and hook up the lines before mounting the radiator in

Damn, looks like I'll be tweaking this thing for a whle then. I was hoping for some type of Mr. Wizard quick fix involving balloons and hair dryers...
My arms are sore and the cooling temperature can't be helping to make the hoses larger so I'm going to wait until daylight tomorrow to finish jacking this thing on.
I would've done a picture filled write-up of the process if I had a working digital camera but if anyone has any questions about it, feel free to ask. One thing to worry about, as with any other bolted parts of the car, is the bolt heads snapping off due to rust. It happened to two of the bolts I needed to remove, one which holds the radiator to the frame, and one in a clamp. The one on the clamp isn't really an issue but the other one will have to be drilled out.

I don't think that would help as the hoses look to be in pretty good shape and replacing them would mean getting the same size. They just need to be de-virginized I guess...
The coolant hoses went on without a too much of a problem (because they are *****).

My last post was a dirty, dirty lie. The longer transmission fluid hose cracked! :
Does anyone know the size of the original hose? I see that Internetautomar only has the large coolant hoses on his site... and the local shops don't have it.
The car won't come off of 1st gear with this leak

Thanks!

you can normally replace the cracked line with rubber line and hose clamps depending on where it broke.
