if you're letting go of the clutch fast, it could be the throw out bearing. but that wouldnt be coming from the wheels. that would be right in the engine compartment.

its an old car, and if the tranny has never been redone, you might not want to drop the clutch like that? but it shouldnt leave you stranded.

is it only in second?
it could be too much crankshaft end play.

eithert that or your spare tire isnt bolted down tighly

If they are really bad u should be able to tell by looking at them (broken/missing rubber is a bad sign).

Otherwise, have some one in the car and get them to hold the brake in. Put in drive and bring the revs up a bit then try it in reverse (if its a manual release the clutch a bit to load up the motor) and observe whether there is excessive movement at the mounts.

How hard is it to replace the rear mount + transmission mount? The owner before me snapped the e-brake cable a while ago and just parked the car in gear everywhere and never replaced the cable.

dont beat on it you'll be fine.. as long as its a thump and not a whining/grinding, you should be fine (tranny mount? maybe)
