3rd Gen feat. in Hemmings Sports & Exotic

Ok, maybe not featured but I pick up a copy of Hemmings Sports & Exotic Car at to read with my coffee at Barnes & Noble because it has this beautiful 240Z on the cover...

So I flip to the article and it's the 25 Japanese Collectibles you should buy now... And to my surprise there's a picture of my car! Well, not my car, but one that looks just like it (only new). Mods warn me if this is too much copyrighted material, but I'll atleast cite my sources.

"1989-1994 Nissan Maxima SE
The styling of the 3rd generation Maxima had always been attractive, but it 1992, thanks to the addition of the 190hp, twin-cam V-6 with variable valve timing and direct ignition, the car was a killer. While the 300ZX had become a bloated, fat-Elvis parody of itself, the Maxima was a lithe, sexy sedan, worthy of the 4DSC (four-door sports car) moniker Nissan's marketing dweebs cooked up. 1991 to 1994 SEs with manual transmissions got a variable induction system to enhance mid- to high-range power, and if you can live with the 160hp version in 1989-1994 GXEs and 1989-1991 SEs, you'll have one of the most reliable engines ever built by Nissan, in one of the most attractive Japanese sedans out there."

Oh yeah, it says you should pay $1000-$4000...

So I don't feel bad about paying $1175 for mine

Amen, brother! I have no plans of selling mine EVER. One day it may very well be a true cult classic.

I think I'm going to put my car in storage and take it out after 50 years so that I can sell it for a couple hundred thousand...hopefully.

Seriously, the 3rd gen is an amazing car. Even after driving newer and more expensive cars, I am still impressed by how well it drives compared to them.

Wonder why it didn't say anything about the VE being reliable

I do agree with the article though, the third gen is a great car.

If anyone of the maximas become a collector's car, it will be the 1st gen RWD version. IMHO.

Otherwise if you decide to buy a copy of the mag, there's also a nice article about the JDM 1969 Nissan Bluebird 1800SSS. And a small feature on the up-coming US-bound GT-R.

The other 24 "Japanese Collectibles to buy now" were:
1970-1978 Mazda RX-2 and RX-3
1993-1995 Mazda RX-7
1992-1997 Subrau SVX
1970-1973 Datsun 240Z
1992 Mitsubishi Galant VR-4
1990-1998 Maxda MX-5 Miata (so I guess my 99 wasn't good enough...)
1971-1973 Toyota Celica
1991-1994 Nissan Sentra SE-R
1999 Honda Civic Si
1987 Isuzu Impulse RS Turbo
1978-1980 Plymouth Fire Arrow (Mitsubishi Lancer Celeste in Japan)
1988-1991 Subaru XT6 4WD
1986-1989 Mitsubishi Starion ESI-R
1993-1995 Acura Legend GS
1979-1982 Maxda RX-7
1989-1992 Nissan 240SX (I really wish I'd kept mine...)
1976-1979 Toyota Celica Liftback
1979-1981 Toyota Celica Supra
2000-2001 Acura Integra Type-R
1995-1996 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 Spyder
1985-1986 Toyota Corolla GT-S Twin Cam
1988-1991 Honda Prelude Si 4WS
1988-1990 Toyota MR2 Supercharged
and the Datsun 2000 Roadster, any year.

Articles usually don't prove anything, they just state a couple of people's opinions.

Slap what in the 4th gen faces? No VQ=No care

I'll get a third gen again as soon as it's feasible to drop a VQ35 or a DE-K into it without a lot of money, until then I'm happy to drive my 4th gen around, minivan suspension and all

I've always been a fan of the 3rd gens. Swap in a VQ30DE from a 4th gen then it'll really be a collectible

i agree the VQ35 would be the only exceptable swap

i think in about 20-30 years the VE 5spd will be a collectors car just like the 60s muscle cars are today and people will settle for gxes and swap VE 5spds in and add the se tails, white gauges and paint the crome body color and all that to look like cloans just like when people take a regular pontiac lemans and "convert" it to a gto or a regular cutlas into a 442

this article must be in the november issue, or maybe i'm just blind because i couldn't find it in the december issue. and screw an engine, body style is what is important. it's always possible to swap in more power...

I agree. I hate to burst everyone's bubble but the 3rd gen isn't going to be a "classic" car that people are dying to get their hands on. You have to look at how much of a following the cars have now, and there's not many 3rd gen fans compared with most other cars. The classic muscle cars had huge followings to begin with because there weren't alot of different cars to choose from, and the followings just seemed to increase through the years. The 3rd gen Maxima was pretty popular in it's time, but the following has diminished over the years and people have moved on to newer things.

On the other hand I can see it maybe being a "cult classic", I think that means it would be a classic to a certain following of Maxima enthusiasts like the .org.

Oh, and MrGone---Little squeaks are cheap and easy to repair, but tick.tick.tick.tick.tick.tick isn't very cheap or easy And who needs a topend when you have a VQ35 Just messing w/ you bro., I know we've gone back and forth before

my uncle used to own a 3000GT spyder, that car was the ****. (Back when Germans still used cloth tops LOL. ) It was an SL, so it was slow as heck, but still fun!

Now, even GM has a hardtop convertible. *sigh*

hmmm....one more reason to buy a 3rd gen. Knowing my luck, the prices will start to climb just when I get the $ to buy one.

I'll bet people who bought AMC pacers and Gremlin's didn't think their cars were gonna be worth anything , either, and check out those sale prices lately.

Well maintained , old/classic cars get lotsa $ , so be kind to your Max!
BTW, no matter how much it could sell for, If I had a third-gen, I'd still keep it.

I paid $2500 for this 91 SE Feb. 04 with 190k on it. The original owner(older female college teacher) was asking $2975. Meticulously maintained by her local Nissan dealer it runs like some I test drove with with 100k wish they could.
