ok..uhm OUCH - friggin hood struts!!!!!

there really, REALLY has to be a better failure mode engineered into hood struts. i mean can't they be made to change color or be really noisy or shoot out sparks when they're about to fail?

opened up the hood to swap out a battery terminal (since the original corroded itself OFF of the positive). just as i'm tightening down the terminal, BAM! hood latch straight to the noggin. talk about shock and awe. surprised it didn't break skin...

guess what my next purchase is

4 foot wooden pole? I've had it happen to me too on my 4th g, I just hold it up with my penor. Jk I use a snow brush to hold it up if its not staying up, so it becomes my year round snow brush.

This is so funny. This thread pops up from time to time. People spend thousands making their cars go a little faster or look a little better or spend thousands on stereo equipment with amps and subwoofers and whatnot. Then they don't want to fork over a measley fifty bucks for a pair of hood struts that will probably be that last ones they have to buy!!!!

I'm too cheap to buy new ones

I think I posted this in a couple other threads but I'll post it again so more people can see it.

takes one heck of a large amount of wind to compress the hood shut on a new set.

Well yeah i'm sure it would, but why spend $50 bucks when putting the little prop in there takes a whole 3 1/2 seconds...It is just not worth the $$ to me...

Besides that everytime i try to buy something from your site useing paypal,it wants me to use a echeck...When i have plenty of $$ in the p/p acct.

easier to hold up the hood.
I like them when they work, less labor than a hood prop

I am still planning to make me a set of 4 inch PCV pipe (3/4 dia). Cut a grove along the side and insert them in to the old hood struts. It's a suggestion from someone on the net in earlier post.

Well the real question should be how often to replace them for preventative maintenace. I don't recall the FSM having this info. Also I'd bet it depands on your weather conditions and how often you use ur hood up, to really determine the answer to that. Once a year? Once every 2?

WHAT?!?! 2 years?!?! wow...so i guess almost 16 years should be considered better than average...r u certain the ones on the 92 were originals? 2 years seems obscenely short for OEM

mine are 14 years old and still struttin'

mine fell last night while i was trying to fix my spark plug dilemma, because IMMEDIATELY after i put the "new'' plugs in, it started raining and who can go to work the next morning with Fawked plugs? Not i. Nut yeah, i only put the hood up liek halfway so rain wouldnt get into my plug holes, and i went to the drivers side for something inside the car, and i heard the hood fell...landed on my coilpacks, but no damage.

just ordered some off ebay- 29 shipped.. I looked at mines, they are oem, and she is a 93, so 13~~~ years give or take, not bad. i say average is about 10-15 years depending how many regular oil changes and or high strung young maxima modders open thier hoods. ex intake install or maxima meets

I gues my struts must be extra special then, cause they have lasted 19 years and a few months, and still tickin. Also my hood struts come with a plastic safety bar attached to them, so that when they do fail, you can prop the hood up on that one.

unless you bought the car new, someone added that bar later on.
