Coolant temp sensor Question!

If your temp gauge on your dash is reading a temp that is mid-way the span of the gauge does that mean your coolant temp sensor is working?

I heard if it is bad it could cause a high idle and I have a high idle I thought I would go buy a new one but I want to see the answer to the above Question First

Thanks Guys

The coolant temp sensor is a very cheap part, about $20-$25 so it wouldn't hurt to change it out..

It may also be a bad or dirty idle air control valve[iacv]...I would clean it first..Then if that doesn't help it then change the cts...
If you still are having high idle trouble after all that then i have a good used iacv for sale if you have a ve engine...

check your ecu for a code. Does your fans seem to try to stay on after you go to cut the car off.

Your temp gauge reads from its own sensor.
Your cooling fans read from the cylinder head temp sensor.
Are both cooling fans on?

Are both sensors the one for the gauge and the ecu the same sensor ? I thought they were different ! That one in the pic is the one that is the sensor for the gauge ! That I know for sure ! So are they both the same sensor?

Thanks Guys!!

I am pretty sure the cylinder head temp sensor shown above controls the fans and maybe the gauge...You can probably find out for sure by unplugging it after the car is warmed up to see if the gauge stops reading, also if the fans turn off..

the one above may be for the gauge, but not for the ECU/fans

So let me get this all straight-

The Coolant temp sensor controls-
-gauge
-fans

The Cylinder temp sensor controls-
What

Are the two sensors mentioned above the same sensor when you go to by the replacment part?

I thought the Cylinder temp sensor had two wires coming out of it !

The coolant temp sensor has ony 1 wire coming out right !

And what is the one above in that pic supposed to be it looks like my cts to me ! is it
Thanks Guys

Coolant temp sensor:

Controls fans and sends signal to ECU for temperature adjustment

SWITCH-TEMPERATURE W/GAUGE

sends signal to gauge on dash

it would be located on the other side of the pipe (nearest the fire wall) In the water pipe that the temp switch is.

And just to add to the confusion, the following pic is lifted from 'pohjola's CarDomain website (hope I'm not infringing copyright!). The sensor on the right is the temp sending unit which gives signal to your temp gauge. The one on the left is the coolant temp sensor which gives it's signal to the ECU for control of fans/idle speed/etc etc. So why is it labelled EGRC ?. Does this sensor handle exhaust gas recirculation also ?.
