Changing a Master Brake Cyl....

Hello guys,
my "new" car doesn't stop.I was told that it needs new rotors and pad all around but that didn't sold the problem(it helped a little though). The only thing remaining is the brake master cyl (the brake pedal goes all the way down with moderate pressure applied and the car doesn't stop). Anyways, I was reading the instructions on autozone.com and there one think I don't understand: "At this point it will be necessary to adjust the output rod length". What the heck is this and is it really neccesary? And another one:

"Measure the output rod length from the end of the rod to the front face of the booster.

The adjustment of the rod should be 0.4045-0.4144 in. (10.275-10.525mm).

Bench bleed the master cylinder assembly prior to installation."

How do I bench bleed the cyl? I am confused because I was told by many friends that it's an easy job but it just doesn't seem that easy to me...Any help or tips? Thanks in advance....

You have to make sure there isn't any air in the master cylinder before installing it. You do that by putting the master cylinder in a bench vise grip. Put the lines in a transparent bottle and pour in brake fluid. Pump the the brakes with lines attached to the primary cup. Once you stop seeing bubbles you know that you bled the system. You will probably need a bleeder kit in order to get the correct size lines.

ok, I am really confused now. If I put the master cyl. on a vise grip on a bench, how am I going to pump the brakes when the unit will be totally out of the car?

Stick in a small bolt to press in the rod. The same type of rod that sticks out from the brake booster (That black round thing).

He wants to install a new master cylinder. That isn't just a component like calipers. You could do that but it will take a very long time and who says that all the air is going to the same caliper! It is by far easier to bleed the master brake itself since it is already out.

Yeah, definatly bleed the master cylinder. Its pretty easy to put in a new one but making sure everything is bled properly is a pain so make sure you bleed it pretty good. My Uncle and I were doing the same thing last summer and didnt bleed the master cylinder and his 55 Chevy Belair almost ended up in his neighbors living room.
