What are some effecient and cheap performance mods?

Well basically I've gotten to that point in my ownership of my Max where I'm like, "I used to think my car was fast, but now I need a little more in the performance department." I really want to do a 5spd swap but I've come to realize that thats out of my league both mechanically and financially. So...in your guy's opinion, what are some cheap and efficient performance modifications? If you list a mod could you say whats the performance increase from the mod? Thanks for any information.

I wouldn't expect too much from bolt on mods. Unless you go turbo, your better off getting a faster car. And seeing as how the 5spd swap is out of the question, I would guess a turbo would be as well.

There isn't a whole lot you can do inexpensively to a VG auto to make it much faster. I would just concentrate on handling (fstb, sway bars, struts and springs) along with visual or entertainment mods.

You did it the hard way. Swap the wire harness and ecu instead of splicing wires.

Well after some deliberation with a friend who works on Nissans (mainly 240s, but he has done Max's before) he said he'd be more than willing to help me do a 5spd swap if I wanted. Now is this mod worth it...I mean I think it would feel like a whole different car with a manual, but would this conversion bring much to the performance table, or does it just open up more oppurtunities such as performance flywheels, etc?

alex: Manual

But I have a few questions about bolt on mods. Excuse my novice-ness but what exactly are they, how much do some cost, and most importantly, do they work? I read somewhere that a few bolt ons on a 4th gen Max allowed it to perform much better than stock, but maybe that pertains to the 4th gen only.

There is only a 4spd auto, or a 5spd manual.

There is nothing wrong with an intake, exhaust, and strut bar. Those are the ebay basics and all 3rd gen owners should at least have them done.

As far as the tranny swap in a 93 max do you need to change out any other parts, for example the computer the speedo cable or is it a straight swap, and of course the addition of the clutch pedal and other 5 speed pcs.

you need to swap the tranny, maybe axles, the shifter cable, shifter, clutch pedal, and wire a few wires.. maybe a little bit more stuff....

So I'm gonna start off by putting an intake on it...What size filter do I need to buy, and what are some good brands? Injen makes good ones but they are $50+...while others are in the $20-30 range.

an intake is an intake. Just because one has a brand name on it means nothing. I say just make your own short ram with a filter. You're not going to see any significant gains with an intake anyway, not worth it IMO to cut the fender well just to fit a CAI. Your best bet for N/A power increase would be to get rid of the stock restrictive intake box with a cone type filter. And to free up the exhaust system, be that with a pre-made Y-pipe back or having your exhaust shop make you one.

Thats what I'm doing, I thought that was called an intake, but i guess an intake refers to a pre made one. What I meant to ask was what are some good cone filters, and does it matter if I just go out and get a $20 one?

Honestly, as far as performance is concerned, you will see the same gains with a generic cone filter because it's doing the same thing, increasing flow. But I tend to stay away from the foam type filters. I've also always used K&N, they are a little more expensive but they are of excellent quality, flow great, and you can wash them without worry. They pretty much last forever.

Intake. Atleast a adapter to a 3" cone filter. A cold air isnt that expensive. Y-Pipe. Exhaust it all adds up

What intake tubing fits? I vaguely remember hearing something about an accord intake matching. Can anyone verify what year, make, and model.

So ebay accord cai $< than ebay maxima cai? Is, say a $120 pacesetter cai really that much better?

as someone once said on this .org.. an intake is an intake... dont blow $120 on an intake when you can spend $15 and get the same power...... even thought thereisnt alot of power coming from the intake upgrade.. heck, even make your own intake... get parts from home depot
