3rd Gen 5sp Transmission woes

I'm a frequent reader, the subject has been covered multiple times. '90 SE 5sp, 230K with bad input shaft bearings. Wanna try the job myself. From my reading, I need a puller which I can rent to get the bearing off. What about the 'race[?'] the bearing sits in-how do I get that off? I'm assuming if the bearing is worn and needs replacement, the thing it rotates in needs to be replaced as well. I've looked at motorvate.ca and MattBlehm tranny pics. What about the preload/shims that I've read about? This seems critical to preventing a repeat failure, but seems like it might be over my head.

the inner ring on the shot bearing is going to be the only piece of the bearing still on the shaft. what i did was take it to a machine shop and have them pull it off and press the new bearing on. i think i read someone say they replaced it even without a puller or press, but the inner ring could be on there pretty snug. i say go for it, worry about these details once you have the shafts removed from the case and are ready to re-assemble the box. it's a money saving job and there's a good amount of personal satisfaction doing it yourself. get the new bearing in there and you should be good to go. the new bearing will hold up, at least mine has and i've pushed it pretty hard since replacing.

I will second the "money-saving job" bit Hectic was talking about. The parts are just a small fraction of what a tranny shop will charge in labor.

I have been quoted over $1k from two different places to do the job, most of that is labor cost.

Luckily, I picked up a good used low mile tranny. I just have to get it here from Seattle and install it

Thanks guys, this old man's gonna go for it. Do you recommend I replace all bearings in the tranny, plus seals? Where do you buy the parts-dealer or on-line?

i wouldnt worry about any of the other bearings if there were no other issues with the trans and i would just put what factory shims were in back in place

i order my bearings and seals from www.drivetrain.com they are very reasonable compared to the dealer

you need access to a FSM if youve never done any sort of trans work or your pretty much garenteed to mess somthing up
