Spraying a y-pipe to prevent rust

hey guys. im going to be getting a warpspeed y-pipe soon. i was wondering if i could use engine paint(or maybe theres something more specifically for this type of thing) to coat the pipe in to help prevent rust. i live in pittsburgh PA soooo ya rust city. has anyone done this before? let me know your ideas or past experience(s).

Thanks
Tony

Nothing short of a performance coating is going to prevent rust for any decent length of time. Unless you are buying a SS or a JET HOT coated one already. Maybe see if a powder coating place can apply a high temp version on?

No matter what anyone says it will cost, it will only cost what local place can do it for. So I suggest you look in the yellow pages and call a few places. Ultimately you will have to do this anyway

you don't want to powdercoat the exhaust. the exhaust gets upwards of 1500F (I have an EGT in mine just under the manifold and on track days, I see it almost max out at 1600F.)
I've used every kind of spray-type from krylon to 3000F on mine just to keep it a shiny pretty silver, and it all cooks and flakes off within a few months.

for someone that lives in the rust belt, I HIGHLY recommend you pony up the extra $50 for a stainless pipe if you're concerned about rust.

it will cost you more than that to have it ceramic coated, and then it will rust on the bare spots the first time you scrape it on something (and eventually, it will happen. trust me.).. so for your case, just spend the extra $50 for the stainless one and you won't ever have to worry abouit.

I've had a WSP stainless y for 4 years, and while the welds and flex joint surrounds are rusted, the pipes themselves are in excellent shape.

One of the byproducts of combustion is water. Ever notice that clear liquid dripping out of people's tailpipes? Most exhausts rust from the inside out.

True but only if you take short trips. If you drive your car for at least 10-15 minutes, the pipes get hot enough to evaporate the moisture. If always take really short trips, then yes, water accumulates in the pipes and can cause corrossion/rust.
