Transmission won't separate from engine

Yo- from the Philly area
I spent the day trying to remove my transmission and I'm stuck at separating the transmission from the engine. I removed both axles, the Y-pipe, and I have a transmission jack supporting the trans. It will drop about 2 inches then the engine starts to drop with it. I removed lots of bolts on brackets and stuff. Do I have to move the tranny horizontally a few inches before it will drop vertically? Can I use a pry bar between the engine and trans, or will I damage something? What am I missing? Am I dumb like Rocky?

you need to support the engine if you haven't already and im assuming you undid the two transmission bolts that hold it up. if not that could be why it isnt separating from the engine.

oh, you won't really hurt anything prying just use a stiff putty knife or something but you shouldn't have to put much into it to get them to come apart

Thanks-re the transmission bolts you mention the mounting bolts, 3 of them per bracket on the drivers side of the transmission. I removed everything I can see and BTW, it's a 5sp if that matters. I think I have to slide horizontally to clear the input shaft, then drop according to other reading in the forum.

yeah you do have to slide horizontally a little, btw you can leave the y-pipe on, there are like 11 bolts or something that hold the tranny to the engine so make sure you got them all and you should have no trouble. i litterally dropped the tranny the first time i did it...

make sure the starter bolts are completely removed. they will catch on the flywheel and keep it from coming off fully. happens all of the time.
