powerstearing problem
powerstearing problem
when i first turn on my car if i turn the wheel, it makes a very weird screeching sound, it sounds like it's comming from the front right of the car.. sitting in it. it happens as i put the car in first gear and start to roll, it stops as soon as i start moving the car over like 2mph , it only happens at roll while car is cold , i think it's powerstearing im not sure, any input from the experts?
Accessory belts
make sure they are not loose...
Screeching really sounds like a belt, or less likely a bearing problem in the pump. Usually low oil makes a groaning, gurgling or whining sound (but not generally screechy).
Remember the fluid to use is NOT power steering fluid, it uses automatic transmission fluid in the steering pump.
i doubt it's oil as my engine shows no signs of leeks , the engine is dry all over , i dunno if gasoline is the same thing , i get the smell though the vents but no visible stains on the floor or underthe car anywhere..
quickest way to find where to tighten the belt? im almost sure its the belt, and what kinda of transmission fluid should i add if my tank is low, i know alot of people mentioned a centain brand.

The power steering belt can be adjusted by raising the idler pulley located behind the passenger tire, just behind the oil pan. It is mounted to an aluminum bracket. Loosen the nut on the front of the idler, then turn the adjustment bolt on the bottom of the bracket to tighten, then re-tighteb the nut on the front.

You need to use dextronIII/mercon transmission fluid for the p/s system...
im gonna make surei ask all the questions here before igo out and screw this up , should car be on or off , how do i know if the belt is tight enough so i dont over tighten it?

tightening the belt
But if someone is willing to try, how will they ever learn without asking questions and getting their hands dirty?
Put 22lbs of force where the chevron points, the belt should deflect about 10mm from a straight line. If it deflects more than 16mm, you need a new belt.
