Question about rust

There is a small rust spot on my car, its about half the size of my index finger. I was thinking about getting it fixed, but it would be around $200. I plan on having the car for another 2 years, I was wondering, will the rust get much bigger in the time? If its going to spread to the whole side of the car, I will worry but I'm thinking its not even worth it to mess with it.

Dremel, primer, paint. $12.

Sure, it won't look great. I mean, chances are your car is faded and new paint will not blend in very well. But it alleviates the spreading problem and it'll still probably look better than a rust spot.

I got a bunch of those on my car, Maaco quoted me 1600-1800 to remove every single rust spot on my car and complete new paintjob..I think I'll just leave it like that. your $12 solution makes sense but only if you have 1 spot and not everywhere lol

It will if it is not addressed. Is this surface rust and the metal is still solid to the touch and not flaking?

I'd deal with the rust now, it's like cancer and once it's started, can spread really fast. I dunno how much salt the use down there in Chicago, but in two years you could go from a bubble to a hole. Might as well fix it now.

no, but it's worth $12. And you work and the auto parts store! How much does one of those little bottles of touch up paint run you? One of primer, one of paint, a little fine grit wet sand, and some clear coat... did we break $15 yet? Maybe throw in a sprite and some gummy bears and we'll end up with just enough change from a $20 to take it to the carwash after the work's done...

Is there a tutorial or something on the web that shows how to do this?

Well, besides the Google, doesn't this site offer in a repair sticky a link to Autozone.com repair guide? I'm too lazy to check, and besides, the body on mine is in the process of being held together by patch welds (in other words, in need of much more serious help).

Seriously though, just remember the rule of thumb about rust: whatever you see on the surface, there's much more underneath.

fiberglass patch kit > more rust underneath

Columbian, I'm sure you sell those at your store too. Admit not knowing what to do and I'm sure you have a co-worker who can give you some pointers and maybe even a hand.

I would say ask Brian, but I'm a little doubtful about his rust repairing abilities...

We do sell a lot of body-work supplies and yes I will get 20% on them and I've asked some co-workers but they're always busy and arent quite knowlegeable when it comes to body work.

Brian actually recommended this Primer/Rust killer real long time ago when I first joined the board but I never did buy it or anything. I should..
