What is this part?

So, I feel entirely stupid for asking this, but I've been searching google and maxima.org for some sort of answer, and returning with nothing, so here goes: What is this component, and what does it do?

The reason I ask, is because, whatever it is, the wires that connect to the underside of it have slipped out of their connector, and don't seem to want to reach it ever again, so I must crimp them to extra wire and reconnect them, I just don't know why it's there.

I don't recall any wires connecting to that canister. There are two vacuum lines underneath it though. If factory wires won't reach it, then logic dictates that this is not where they go, nothing has magically moved under the hood has it?

There's a connector on the bottom side much like every other electrical connector in the car. I sure as hell hope nothing has moved magically, and I'm fairly sure that they are wires because of the metal conduits on the ends. The vacuum tubes are still connected, but these wires have been unplugged from the canister for probably about 3 months, when I first noticed them lying there. Power valve controller. I'm not quite sure I know what a power valve is, but, if my car's still been running with them disconnected, it doesn't seem all that vital. But then again, I am a complete idiot.

Alright, well, I reconnected the wires, seems they werent connected to the unit itself, but merely a connector bolted to the sides, coming out of the wiring bundle that the Air intake sensor is connected to, and heading down under the engine. Now, I just wonder what theyre connected to, because as soon as I fired it up, the idle was about 200RPM higher than previously (it's now at 1k, rather than 700-800), and the engine was shuddering a bit. I'm not sure if those two things are connected.

Oh, and that's not my pic. Credit goes to whoever's 1989 Silver Maxima I pulled up on google. Mine is horrible compared to that, and my cameras broken.

Edit: According to a link in that thread, it's the Automatic Tranny resistor wire.

Hi,

Newbie here, I come from the supra world and am working on a friends car from work, not trying to hijack the thread but I have similar problems. The car is a 93 SE 5spd and it is totally screwed. Both surge tank lines are disconnected, the only one still in the engine bay is the one with the check valve. What does the green harness connect to. Also I can't find the IAT sensor, so I'm thinking it is gone and the green harness. Left bank coils are all cracked to ****, tried taping them up but nothing. Power transistor was replaced with a known good one, the car is super slow. Slower than my beater cavalier daily car. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and I would search but can't because of post count.

Thanks,
Justin.

Is the bottom line coming out of the green vsv (vacuum switching valve in toyota speak). This car doesn't have the green vsv under the brown one. Pretty sure that is where the extra harness I see is supposed to be. Is that pic of a manual or auto?

r pav- sorry again for hijacking this thread.

mygreenmax94- thanks for the pics very helpful. i looked at the sticker inside the door and I was mistaken, or am I, date of manufacture is 9-92 so that does make it a 93 right??? My hard line setup looks different than the one you sent. I don't have the hard line that crosses over the right side of the egr vsv. Also upon closer inspection, the mounting bracket for the brown vsv doesn't have anywhere underneath it to mount the green one. My vac lines off the hard lines are definitely setup differently than the way you have them pictured. If someone could post a pic for me it would help a lot to explain what is going on with this car. I am thinking maybe that the vsv assembly was replaced at one time or another with the wrong type?

internetautomar- how much and where do I donate. This is a very useful site and I can forsee this car having a few more problems in the near future.

vansskaterfreek- to late. I picked up a set from Oreilly's today (hopefully just the cracked ones need to be replaced. $55 x 3 and $57 x 3 each.

Since it is 4am and I am still up let me give some more info:

93 SE 5spd VE30DE
175,000~miles

I picked the car up and drove the car home from work. She had it at the nissan dealership in Atlanta, they wanted a grand to replace the coil packs. Her description was that the car would run fine when it was cold but after 15 min it would start acting up and shut off/ stall out. Let it sit for five minutes and drive it a few miles and it would happen again.
I left work and got maybe... 3 miles and it shut off, let off the throttle and it idled fine so I went on my way. It did fine for 15 miles on the interstate although feeling very sluggish and down on power for a car that is supposed to have 190hp and 190tq ( i think). It went through a quarter of a tank in those 18-20 miles. I stopped and put some gas in it (93) and started on my way. About a mile down the road all hell broke loose. It began to stall again but would die completely, no idle. I let it sit for a few minutes, started it up and it idled fine, but as soon as any load was put on it it would hesitate severely and stall again. This happened 20-30 times on the 8 mile drive from the gas station to my house.
I pulled the coil packs and plugs. Left bank, cracked. Right bank, looked good. Plugs... Bosch platinum +2 ( i know). The insulator and electrode were cracked off of #3, so I figured those two things were a pretty good bet on what was wrong. I checked as many other sensors as I could find (IAT sensor and the power valve are still a mystery) and everything was ok except for the TPS which was a little off, the power transistor which I found a good one at a junkyard, and corrosion in most of the harness plugs. In between picking up the coils today, I picked up some NGK BKR5E-11's and taped the cracks up on the left bank coils, and put in the good power transistor. My brother and I drove the car around for about thirty minutes trying to heat it up as best we could to reproduce the same thing that happened the first night. I still have the shut off then let off the throttle and everything is fine but no bucking/ hesistating/ shutting off. Coils are still bad right...

My friend has been through three shops and hasn't had a car for three months so I am trying to do her a favor and fix as much as I can for as little as possible. I do not want to throw parts at it like most of the repair shops she has been to. Sorry for the novel and thanks to everyone again for all your help.
