How much drop?

Hey all! I was looking to replace the struts on my max and was thinking of replacing the stock springs to drop the car while I'm at it.

My ? is -- Is a 2" drop too much to have some 17's (likely stock infinity rims or max rims) and the appropriate tire to yield the same overall size as the stock 15" wheel & tire combo, or should I stick with a 1"-1.2" drop?

Also, are sprint springs any good as these are the ones I am looking at and they provide the drop in question above.

Thanks all for your help! I have read the stickies and searched and can't seem to figure out if it rubs or not as everyone seems to have a different answer - just hoping to get a more consistant answer here.

for a big drop spring, i'd say go intrax. great quality and looks. and i dont think the amount of drop is as big of a deal when it comes to fitment as the wheel's offset and tire size

It really is personal prefererance. I Just did struts/springs and debated for a while if it was gonna be intax or eibach. 2" or 1.4" and opted for the eibach because i prefered the look. as the person above me said it has alot to do with the offset rather then the size of the rim. I got 18x8 g35 rims with +30 offset and ive ran both 235 & 225 40 18's with no rubbing issues. That being said i would also work within your budget, Dont opt for ****ty springs & struts so you can get bigger rims.

INTRAX / TOKICO, with 17"... ROTA 17X7.5" with Khumo 235/45/17s H&R spacers with extended studs... No rubbing on the fenders, fenders NOT rolled.

The amount of drop is really determined by you. How low do you want to go?

Aside from Shavedmax (bags) I think the general consensus on this board is go with Sprint for maximum drop (2 inches), Intrax for a lower drop (around 1.75 inches) or "standard" Eibach drop of about 1.2 inches.

KYB or Tokicos are a minimum for struts. They still might blow out on you. A lot of guys have had to replace blown Tokicos. I think Jeff and Matt can attest to this. The optimum struts are Konis, but they are more expensive and require a little bit of extra work on the rears. No matter what, OEM replacements (Gabriel, Monroe, etc) are not recommended.

Thanks for reminding me that SPRINT was a 2" drop. Good info. Next time... SPRINT and a 225/45/17s.

Ah, ok - Awesome. So Sprint are good, just the lowest drop.

I was thinking before this post of Eibach and KYB's. maybe even Intrax - but don't want to go completely down.

By the way - how do you blow a strut unless you just abuse it?

edit: Oh, and if I had the money I'd say screw the struts and springs and just buy your car Cliff!!!

i went with eibach/kyb (too many other things to do on car to afford konis) and i am glad i didn't go lower. it is about personal preference but it is also about road conditions in your area. i live in boston and potholes are everywhere and patched potholes are sometimes worse. i see guys with slammed cars all the time who can't drive the speed limit because they have to be so carefull

Eibach/Tokico (or Koni) imho. Handles great and isn't low enough to be a headache.

I have a eibach and tokico combo. Its only a 1.2 inch drop, but gives you some suspension travel so you dont have to hit bump stops all the time.

I drive to and from school/work and one of my struts blew in less than a couple weeks after it was put in. Lucky I got a free replacement from tokico.

I thought long and hard about what I wanted to fit my car with. Konis are the only struts with great feedback. If you are going to spend the money on a new setup, spend the extra and ge Konis. As for the drop, I went Eibach because of the sh!tty roads around here and ground clearance issues. Anything lower than Eibach's 1.2 inch drop deserves a Blehmco camber kit. Do your homework and make a decision. We're here to help...Best of luck!

Actually the rears have always been more trouble. Though I guess that goes for the GXE's more than the SE's. Disconnecting the brake setups can be real easy ot take a looooog time. I even had a gland nut that I had to cut out once, no amoutn of heat, pb blaster ot torque would get it free. Turned into a day for one corner...

yeah, but installing Koni's on the front actually takes extra steps (more work)

we got some nasty pot holes around south jersey too. but i guess thats almost anywhere with a big city close by
but i am very happy with the ebiach/kyb set up. handles great and its not too low.

I had Eibach / TOKICO for 2 years. The ride was harsh, and it still looked like a 4X4. Switched to INTRAX and new TOKICOs. The ride even out and no more 4X4 look.

The original TOKICOs / EIBACH combo... struts were still good.

It's a matter of spring rates, not "lowering preference". Spring rates are the key.

TOO CLEAN, TOOOOOOO CLEANNNN!!!

I think Sprint is a linear spring, and the INTRAX are progressive.

At this hour of the day I am thinking...

Put the Sprint Springs in the FRONT and the INTRAX in the back.

That way the car would look level.

Your Car is in a world of it's own Chris.

I think you might need to be the guinea pig for mixing springs. Front Sprint / Rear Intrax.

What do yah say?

In due time maybe. long story short the car has been sitting for almost 2 years. i finally have a garage to work in so once i bring her back to life i may do it. always thought about that combo but i got lucky. on intrax it sat even all the way around even w/ all the crap in the trunk.
