Replacing Control Arms and Minor Rust issue..pic*
Hey guys, I finally removed my divers side control arm. It wasnt all that hard, just needed to wiggle and pull after i removed the 27mm nut. But I realized that some of the rubber is still on the thingy that connects the arm to the frame. See pic below... How am i suppose to remove that? I was thinkin about using a blowtorch??
Also, once I remove the rubber, it will just be metal, and that part of the new control arm is also metal.. Wouldnt that just be metal to metal contact?? How would that produce any cushion??
As for the rust, its only on the drivers side. Heres a pic. It doesnt look that deep, appears to be only on the surface. I was thinking about spray painting (without sanding) it with some kind of rust protector/eater. What u guys think?? Any recommended products??
thnx again guys

I definetally wouldn't cut that. That part is actually called a gusset. It's the only part that attaches the control arm to the frame, besides the U bracket on the rear bushing....and even a bolt that goes through the bracket goes through that gusset. You'll also notice some heave duty factory welding that holds that metal stud to the gusset. I would use a wire brush attached to a drill to remove that rubber. Maybe some heat too, but I probably wouldn't torch it too much because you don't even want to risk warping something so critical to the suspension. Refer to the pic:

OOOHhhh wait a minute. I misunderstood what brian was saying. The part that rubber is on IS part of the control arm, and yes it must be pried off or cut off. Just be careful not to ruin the threads underneath. The part that needs to be removed is noted in the pic: if you can get enough of a gap between the sleeve and the gusset, maybe you could hammer it off with a screwdriver??

UPDATE. Ok guys cool, I got the sleeve off with about 10 minutes of torching and some PB Blaster. It twisted right off with some plyers.
As for the rust, I bought the best thing I ever bought from Kragen. This little wire brush that connected to my drill. I cleaned it down to the metal, and then sprayed it with some "Rust Primer". I am not planning on painting over it, the guy at the store said i dont have to if i dont want to.. is this true? i mean i dont think the rust will come back, i gave it about 3 coats.
This is the stuff i used:

get some undercoat for it. Most rattle can primer is porous so it will let water in to re-rust the area. Just get some good paint or undercoating (since the rest of that stuff is undercoated) but do not leave it uncoated.
just dont be so sloppy...cover the other parts you dont want painted or undercaoted.

1) Nice job with the sleeve
2) Nice job with prepping the steel
3) I agree with Michael w/ using the undercoating. Eventually the paint will get sandblasted off and will rust again also. Hence the undercoating. But try not to get it on the CV. Might throw off the balance

Yeah I think i'll get some rubber undercoating today. I didnt think it would matter about being sloppy with the primer, because no one would see that part of the car, and like jeff said, it will eventually get sandblasted off...but now i think i should have masked stuff like the brake lines, and tie rod boots...i guess i was tired from a long day
