help with automatic transmission vg30e
i just purchased a 1988 maxima j30 jdm japanese import and it's slipping really bad when i put it into gear.the engine is a vg30e 3rd generation.when i put the car in reverse it's good but if i put it into drive it doesn't go anywhere.i know it sounds like my gearbox has died but is there anything i can check? it doesn't seem to be going into gear?when i select 1st or 2nd it just feels like it's still in neutral and the same with drive. Is there a gear selector that might be damaged? also when i checked the fluid level it's way overfilled, halfway up the dipstick but it's clear.
any help would be appreciated. thanks

I've got a similar problem, I think... HELP ME PLEASE...
My Max is finally starting to show his age and things are getting annoying.
When I go to start the car, I need to really shove the shifter into park, or nothing happens when I turn the ignition. Sometimes this phenomenon goes away, othertimes I need to hold the shifter at the top in park while turning the key (difficult to get both arms over there at the same time...) And every so often I need to jiggle the shifter in reverse in order to get it into reverse. In all of the other gears, there are NO PROBLEMS. This is an automatic, in case that isn't obvious, and a 1994 GXE. I am not really sure how to describe the problem other than how I just did. The light in the shifting mechanism also recently burnt out, and I wasn't sure how to get in there to replace the bulb.
I have a feeling that there must be some sort of sensor that's been knocked loose, or something with the bushing, but I thought I'd ask y'all before I start tearing the car apart.
This is my first post here, and apparently I can't start a thread, so I thought I'd piggy back on a similar question. I know that's a major faux pax, but I need to get this fixed!!!
Its due for an inspection, and I know that as a girl, I am bound to be told there is more going on than there actually is...

You can also start the car in N instead of reaching both arms over.

I've been through three vg auto trannies. 600 for a replacement another 600 for installation and I was also quoted 3200 for a complete rebuild with a 6 month warrantee. I opted for the replacements that offered a 90 day warrantee. Ironically my longest tranny lasted only 5 months the rest were litterally days after the warrantee expired. Best bet is to find another car that has a better auto tranny or make a gamble.

I have a good one
1994 VG30e engine that has a flawless automatic. Has held up to being daughter's first car, but the ngine didn't, now has a sheared crank at block. If you want a good tranny, I will accept an honest offer for it.
We are in Virginia, shipping or pickup would be you responsibility, but it is a good transmission as is.
Reply with your best offer and take into consideration shipping or pickup cost.
I can have it removed and for you.

hey, this might be a bit OT, but I thought the 92-94 GXE A/T were somewhat more resilient than the 89-91 GXE A/T. I know all 3Gen GXE's have VG30E engines. Just wondering if it was true or not. If it were true, then when 3Gen'rs are ordering used A/Ts, they should just order a 92-94 GXE A/T, since it'd bolt right up to any VG30E.
*edit*
Yup, they are. See Post#3 at http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=485683

the 92-94 SE got the stronger trans it will NOT work on a VG30E without some serious creativity
