VE owners only poll about VTCs

Just out of curiosity, I want to know how many of you currently have VTC clacking or have had it and done something about it?

If you vote please state your engine mileage and maybe the mileage that the VTCs started.

My vote is for JDM installed, some clacking. Original ones clacked from about 100k until the new engine put in at 148k. They were clacking almost full time then.

Also, if you have fixed them, maybe post the results.

got my 92 with 200k on it. the previous owner had done the mod to make them quiet by grounding out a certain wire...they cost over 1grand to fix i was told.

its a VERY common issue

When I bought my 92. A VTC came apart and took out the front cover so I bought it with a busted engine. I bought a core engine for the build and put kits in the VTCs. They clacked on the first start-up but I expected that. They may have ticked once or twice since...Courtesy Nissan can order the kits if you provide the part number. If a dealer looks it up they won't show it available. Do a search on here and there should be multiple posts with the part number.

I have some VTC clack at the wierdest times, like when I'm idling at a light
NOT when it's cold, go figure
this one is just pissing me off.
I've hopefully got a DSM coming that will probably end up as my DD, and who knows what will become of the max then

For a guy getting ready to sell such a beauty, your awfully interested in this matter Chris

I'll have to go with Original engine, some VTC clacking, especially cold since it's the closest to describe mine. Got the car at 136k in August of last year, and it would clack at lights or start up randomly with the STP filter and the dirty oil it came with. Once I did the oil change with the F2 Yota filter/Castrol GTX 10w40, the clack pretty much disapeared. Once oil change time was getting closer, it would clack here and there on cold nights. Next oil change, my dad recommended his V8 D3 Yota filter that he had layin around, and the clack was absolutely gone way up till the next oil change for pretty much the majority of the winter! Since I've switched to 10w30 with no problem, and when I heard rumors of Toyota cheapening out on their filters, and Mobil 1 was still a quality filter, I gave it a run.. Big mistake.. Clacking all the way up till the next oil change on and off. I've been using the D3s since, and now at 149k, not a clack. Of course a very mild ticking is always present, but no getting away from that. I think if people actually took my advise for once on that filter, they would not be disapointed. D3 Yota filter FTW!

Good to see you posting again GI

When I first bought my car it was relatively quite for about 6 mo. to a year. After that it only 'clacked on statup then quited down. Then 24 hr 'clackin. It did that till it made a hole in my engine where the right timing chain is.

Curious that you don't have usdm engine swap for pole. Anyways I swap engine, usdm, and replaced the vtc's in the process. So far so good, but I'm only at around 400+ miles. It's DEFINITELY nice not to hear a bomb in your car.

I rebuilt mine last March at around 245k now I'm just under 258k and no clacking...knock on wood. Also I had them grounded since about 225k before they started clicking all the time at around 245K.

some clacking a at random times. personally got the car around 169K and i thats when they started ticking. but started using the stp oil treatment. clack went away, till the next oil change. recently been using the puroil equivalent of the toyota filter. no clacking in addition ive also been adding a half a bottle of the Lucas oil stabilizer. with mostly castrol or valvoline high millage 5w-30. its been working for me for about a year now. rarely hear a clack now. at 207.5K now

bought my car at 101K and the VTC's were clacking 100% of the time. built a custom switch to turn on and off the VTC's depending on if i needed the xtra power. blew the motor at 162k and did the JDM swap. clacking VTC's are now gone and easily forgotten.

Here's my info

- got the car in 1996 with 29,000
- started clacking at start-up about 100,000
- started clacking continually about 104,500
- got tired of having a Ford Powerstoke Diesel and rebuilded both VTC's at 113,000
- at 156,000 miles silence is still gloden
- I've always used Mobil 1 and a Purulator premium filter (I have a case full) which I'm not sure if it has an anti-drain back valve.

What does this info and poll tells you. If you have a VE (JDM, US spec, etc) you already have, or currently, or will be dealing with a clacking VTC. There's no doubt about it, that's the dice we've been rolled

No clacking yet...

I just bought my 92SE with 102,000 miles about 3 months ago and so far no clacking. I know this has been done 1 million times, but what exactly does it sound like when the VTC's go bad? Is it that noticable? How loud is the so called "clacking"? At what mileage does it normally occur?

Safe to say around 100k on every VE engine give or take? The ticking sounds like lifter tick, and the clacking sounds like a little man with a hammer inside your valve cover, or worse.. Yes, when it gets to a certain point, you will attract attention everywhere you go. It's that loud. If you don't have tick/clack, you will quite soon.. No goin around that. Try using a good quality filter(Toyota D3 filter perferably) and change your oil every 2500 miles to help prolonge the quiteness.

I think it sounds like a heavy gauge chain being dragged across your valve cover.

Got mine @ 135,000 4 years ago with no clatter.About 175,000
it started ticking at idle,at 190,000 it got embarassing. It sounded like a rod was knocking hard. I grounded them at 200,000 and stopped the vtc's now @ 245,000 I just here a faint ticking at about 2000 miles after oil change.

Mine usually just are noisey when its cold but been clacking full time lately probably (hopefully...) due to a need for an oil change. I'm planning on using Mobil 1 10w30 and I'm going to check out this D3 Yota filter, anybody have the part #?

Just go to the Yota dealer and ask for the D3 oil filter. Throw me a PM with the results. You won't be disapointed

i was at walmart a week before i bought my ve. the 91 needed an oil change so i figured i'd pick up a cheap filter. i ended up buying a supertech brand filter for $2.00. i never got around to changing the oil in the vg but the ve needed an oil change bad. i was going to go get a toyota filter but i read on the supertech filter box that it had an anti drianback valve. i figured i might as well try it. it seemed to be a well made filter. with fin construction, and lots of holes for good flow. so far the engine has been quiet and an improvement over the crappy standard orange fram filter that was on before. so if anyone wants a well made filter with anti drainback valve, hit up walmart and pick up the supertech.

When I bought mine in March it had roughly 143k on it and there was no clack aside for 2 or 3 seconds right after start up. Now it has 145k and I started to notice some subtle clack action when cold. I just put on a Toyota filter and it seems to be slowly going away.

My 93 had some noise when I bought it at 133k. It has gradually gotten worse, so now, at 172k, even when it is fully warmed up, I can hear the occasional "rattle". I am now in the process of rebuilding both the VTCs.

Clacking comes and goes. Engine also has a "skip" most evident at idle while in gear, sometimes worse than others. The engine sometimes bogs down when first accelerating, also. I don't know if these things are related or not, but my mechanic will be running a diagnostic on it this week.

before you pay a mechanic, I suggest you check out your coil packs. They are easy to take off (just need a 10mm socket) and a lot of times they will have visible cracks that often leads to fluctuating idle, a slight "miss" or even makes your car stall or hesitate.

At one time I had three VE's and two of the three clacked. One I sold with 110K and it clacked at the time. I just sold one that I "cured" by motor flushing and hadn't clacked in the last year.
The amazing thing is the one I have left is a 93 with 191,000 miles on it and it has NEVER clacked.
There wasn't a slot on the poll for that!
