Help on DIY brake job?

I need to get a brake job on my VE but don't want to pay $130+ to someone else if I can do it myself. I'm a novice and haven't done too much work on cars. Is there a link that explains the process (for front and back brakes maybe?) or a manual or something? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I don't know if you can just link from that. You can go to autozone.com, pick your car, go to repair info repair guides and choose brake.

You've got an SE...so that means discs all around...be very thankful. What specifically do you need to do with your brakes? Pads, rotors, both?

they are easy.... well everything is easy with the correct tool... but for these calipers you need a special tool that SPINS and compresses not only compresses the piston like a C-clamp, but i cant remember the name sooo i cant get a picture :slant

im going to try an do my brakes this weekend hopefully

Rear Disc Brake Piston Retraction Tool

http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/shop/LIS-28600.html its only 8.20 from this place. sure you can find it at your local auto parts store.

also for the rear breaks its normally easier if you have a friend to help compress them.

OK, I just got a brake check at Big-O to confirm everything and this is what they told me I need:
All new rotors
New Pads (of course)
Also, I have a sticky passenger side rear caliper.

Where do you suggest I get the rotors and pads. Would autozone be a good source? Ebay? Also, I checked out the autozone instructions for the job under "1993" maxima. Is this going to be the same for my 1992 maxima?

Also, how can I un-stick the passenger side rear caliper, what do I lube up?

Thanks a ton for the help guys, I hope it all works out ok.

the caliper you may be able to get away with just lubing up the bolts that the caliper slides on.

He didn't say anything was "frozen" yet, he just said something about pushing the piston back in and lubing it up and if that didn't work I'd need a new caliper.

Lol...i had the exact problem with mine the other day when i changed my brake pads. What you can try is lifting up the black rubber around the piston with something like a flat screwdriver then spraying some kind of lubricant (like WD40) and then try turning the piston. If it doesn't move u may need to tap it a few times with a hammer to waken it up. If it moves, turn it anti clockwise (should retract if i remember correctly) till it is almost fully retracted. Then add more lubricant and turn it clockwise until it is fully extended. Just continue on with the process until u are happy with how it feels when u are turning it.

P.S Don't be scared to be generous with the lubricant.

I had to take the rubber boot off completely and use a little cleaner to get all the build up out of it, but if you spray plenty of lube in there it should flush it out. You will definately want to twist it in and out a few good times. Other than that brakes are pretty simple.

Ok, I found the best prices and stuff at autozone and I'll be able to get all the rotors and pads and a 2 ton jack for about $200 (a lot less than the $600 quoted to me by Big-O to replace all of this). I read over the autozone DIY guide but have a question.

The autozone DIY guide is for the 1993-1998 maxima. Do the 4th Gens have the same brake system as our 3rd gens? I know the 93 and 94 are 3rd gens too, but why would autozone put the 1993-1998 maxima's together? I don't want to jump into the project and find out the autozone instructions are for the 4th gen! Anyone know? Thanks!

Those are the correct instructions. They use the same breaking systems for the years listed. Youll see it is a very easy procedure.

id rather pay for safety reasons.... i mean when it comes to brakes steering and suspension issues , if you know wat ur doing fine do it but me id pay someone to say this is the problem...fix it good, have it done n ur on ur way.. small things to fix by yourself like head gaskets..water pumps...and spark plugs are easy but safety things i prefer to leave to the professionals!

Anybody know if some brake hardware is available for our cars? I seen people with it, just not on 3rd gens. If so, where to get?
