relocate stereo 2" forward?

my biggest gripe on my max is the dam radio is just out of easy reach.
has anyone done anything about it and do you have pics?
I just want ideas before I go nutty and fab up a new console piece with the radio just a bit forward.
I've been considering since I had the I30.

i'd cut out some spacers that go where the brackets connect to the plastic. screw the spacers to the plastic and screw the brackets to the spacers.

if your handy with fiber glass you could mount it at the base of the gear shift next to the e-brake

already tried it there is a 2" cross brace that would stop it from sitting in right. otherwise it would stick out like 2 or 3 " and that's not leaving any room for the wires. if your willing to cut the bar it would fit but not sure what all that brace supports, you than could put the heater controls in the stereo location with a little tweaking but like i said there is that cross brace to deal with

There IS someone here on the .orgy that successfully put their radio in the heater control spot. Not sure HOW they did it (asked them, but they were a butthole about giving out the info), but they didn't mention anything about the cross brace or cutting.

I think once I decide to put in my new radio, I'm gonna give it a shot. Of course, being the "nice guy" that I am, I'll post pics -if possible - and a write-up on how I went about doing it.

unless it is different on the 93-94 there should be a 2" bar that runs across the back that the deck would hit and cause it to stick out... at least it did on mine otherwise i would have done this mod a long time ago. but like i said that's also with no space for the wires. if you cut it out or maybe even notch it (maybe a option didn't look that close) there would be plenty of room for it to fit and wires to fit in there barely but it would work

something i didn't try was to angle the deck to clear the bar but than the face would have a downward angle and you would be able to tell that it was not a OEM location but question is how bad would it look? maybe worth a shot! might have to retry the mod when i get a little time

boy aint that the truth, iwas wonderin the same thing i wanted to set up like my wife's J30 if i could find a one in a junkyard i'll try fab it up.Even better i'll try to test fit into a junk maxima while i'm there before i go cuttin and splicing theoretically i believe that you "should" be able to extend the wires if your good with a soldering gun.But let me try it out first and i'll keep you guys posted

I love the radio in the original spot. Just in my arm's reach and out of the way of my knees. What I do not like is the useless cup holder that when open tries to cut my leg with it sharp corners.

I'll ASSume that he is referring to the coin tray that has a "cup holder" top under the single din radio

No, the coin tray is the metal one just below plastic cup holder and to the right of the power port!

Maybe something like this would work to bring the head unit out far enough for you?

my seat is dam near bolt upright.
it's better for my back and chest.

I've just gotten spoiled by cars with better ergonomics. and driving 2 hrs a day while trying to find something to listen to, you notice that little flaw

mmm hmm, I didnt listen to my head unit for nearly 2 weeks...well I did but just turned it on and left it on which ever station was on whether legay or not...the battery in my remote was dead and I was just soo lazy to reach over. God bless those 5 dollars that acquired me that 2 pack of CR-2025 Energizers. I can now enjoy music in my car once again.

BTW Brian you should like get them fake nails at a nail salon...maybe you'll reach without having to move your headunit forward. I was also thinking about poking it with a stick like Wayne suggested but I've personally done that and its just sooo much work, I think nails would work way better.
Good luck to you on reaching that awful far head unit

Well, I'm snatching my radio out in the next two weeks so I'll let ya know about that bar thingie. Probably the same on my car as it is on the later years, though.

If your stereo is nothing really fancy (motorized face plate), you can just extend the point where the face plate meets with the control hub on the stereo and just put the face plate anywhere i.e. on the bottom of the e brake lever.
