Speed-O-Meter/VSS

I have a 92 Maxima GXE. At about 160K the speedo would start and stop intermittanly (or however you spell that). Now its dead. I took out the VSS and tested it. I was wondering if anyone else tested their speed sensor. When I really spin it fast it gets upo around 4.5VAC. But at a medium spin it holds about 3-3.5VAC. According to Autozone it should be around 5, which I have hit a couple times, but it doesnt stay steady. My question is if this isnormal or if you guys think the VSS is shot. Im reluctant to get a new one until Im sure because its lik 80 bucks and no returns. Anyone got any ideas?

Just ordered from autozone.com. Didnt say anything about not being able to return electrical pieces. Ill give this a try first. How common is it for instrument cluster to fail? All other gauges work fine. I guess Id have to put in a used cluster if this doesnt work, huh?

Oh yeah and if anyone is trying to remove the VSS, its held in by one #3 philips head screw. Mine was so cased in grease I had no idea what it was! That pic is perfect, right below the arrow is the greasy screw
