ECU (OBD I) consult cables...would this work??

I've been looking into a romulator, zemulator, or wideband O2 sensor recently and I came upon this thing:

NISSAN ECU CONSULT OBD1 DATA CABLE MAXIMA

I was wondering if this would work just like the romulator...and how it was different. Can someone describe in a little more detail the things that I could do with this and if it would be a good purchse?? Thanks alot.

actually it will.
We have the same consult connector and basic outputs as a 4th gen does.
The snap-on scanner I use shows the same data when scanning a 3rd gen VE (92 SE) and a 4th gen VQ (96 I30).
I keep thinking about buying one, but I haven't yet since I have access to the MT2500

No it plugs in. Most of these cables are anywhere from $80-130. www.plmsdevelopments.com in AU offers one too that is already built. You can build your own too by following instructions you can find by searching Yahoo.

Also, a lot of different software can work with the cable once you get it. DataScan is great, but you have to pay for it.

You can also get Calumsult here: http://web.utk.edu/~cjohns32/calumsult/

Here's some more info: http://people.aapt.net.au/~mearcat/Consult/

As much ECU work that I've been doing in the past several years, you'd think I'd get off my butt and order one of these cables and have Consult capabilities. Since I haven't been quite able to tune my ECU the way I want it yet, I haven't needed to see certain information that the Consult provides (i.e. Injector Duty Cycle, Ignition Timing, Throttle Position, MAF voltage, etc).

Edit: That ebay auction you posted is the best price I've seen. Only a few months ago, this same ebay seller was selling these Consult cables for $68.99 plus shipping. $50.99 is the best price you'll find. But you might be able to make your own for about $30. It's worth it to buy one!

you can offer him less and he will take it.
I can't recall how low I got him, but it was a bit lower.

I know they work, but I am not sure to what extent you can vary your settings..

One of the 4th gen .org members hooked mine up at a meet this past summer to see if it worked with a 3rd gen. He just showed me the readouts (similar to the screen shot the ebay link shows). He then shut off the fuel pump from the laptop, stalling the engine.

Question is how does it work for a VG?
our experience is with the VE which is the same as a Z32 ecu essentially
VG is a different ECU.

Hmm...okay well thats good info. Still though....how is this different from a zemulator? My research shows that both can edit ECU variables while the car is running. Can a zemulator just do more editing? What would be the advantage of spending $500 over this? Am I wrong in thinking that they are almost the same thing? Zemulator does things like valve timing, rev increases, and stuff...which is what I'd want one for.

Aaron I think you need to educate me about ECU's and cams and timing and the finer points of engine tuning. Bolts on's are easy schmeasy....I want to know more about designing cams and altering rom settings.

The cable does NOTHING. the Zemulator and the AEM are both new programming. they can change fuel maps, and if i understand the Zem right, can be altered via computer at any time.
The consult is a diagnostic tool, not anything more.

I have no idea. I don't think anyone with a VG hooked it up.

I know that you can alter settings via the laptop with the program he used. Screen name Kenji is the guy that hooked it up. MrGone was there, too.

it can only change timing for that session, once the car shuts off it goes back to stock.
didn't see anything about the rev limiter being changed.

So I e-mailed the seller and asked:
"can this consult cable be used to modify my own chip to preform like the one you sell for the 90-94 maxima with a VG30E?

In other words...can I use this cable to make my own chip like the one for sale in item number 200002885712?? (referring to the EPROM chip in another thread)

-Matt"

They responded like this:
"Matt, thanks for your inquiry. The cable allows you have full control over all ecu parameters, so yes you could alter the code inside the ecu."

Interesting, what do you all think about that??

Edit: I'm not about to prove you wrong though....lol!

Before posting I came across this thread as it deals with what I am going through. Okay, about 70% really.

I bought one of the cables metioned earlier from ebay. I need to reset my airbag light after I had my seats worked on. The problem is that the connector that shipped does not work with my '01 Maxima GLE. Are there part numbers I should be aware of for the connector? Plus, there are some codes referring to car models and I am wondering if that would also be something I need to research.

If someone could please let me know if I am working in the correct direction or if I am off base I would really appreciate it.

Thanks.

Autozone will read/erase the codes stored in the ecu for free...

a few things
1. you have a 5th gen AKA an A33
2. you may be able to reset the airbag light without a scan tool. I know the 4th gen can (I did it on mine)
3. the connector for this tool may be hidden in the dash.
4. if it is worthless to you, I'll buy it off you at a lower price
