you have to be careful about that, because if your timing belt died you could have at least 1-2 bent vavles. My friends 300zx (same engine) bent all 6 intake valvles and broke one.

if that 6hrs labor includes checking the valves and replacing if nessicary then your good to go.

By all means, buy a haynes manual or similiar for replacing the timing belt. The timing of the cam and crankshaft must be set properly. Manual will explain everything. You are already saving $700. Spend some on a manual

get a Nissan FSM it's way better and more accurate than Haynes for this type of advanced works.

of your timing belt snapped, just get a JY motor.
replace the timing belt and seals on it, and install that.
if the timing belt snapped there is a very high chance that you will need to replace multiple valves and possibly pistons and other parts.
you will definately need to pull the head though to make sure.

you can get 92 FSM on ebay. They don't have bootleg electronic version available yet. Only for 94 up to 2005.

+1 for Brian suggestion, for $700 you might as well spending $600 on a new JDM engine with no more than 60K at max. It comes with everything attached to the engine except for tranny, e.g. water pump, alternator, etc... I really think it's way better to get a JDM than to overhaul your engine apart so you guys could manually adjust the pistons, cam, etc... It's not easy works, chances are it'll get screw up again. Even the pros make mistakes too. Save your headache man.

You now have a 500 lb paper weight...

If you break a timing belt on these cars,it will bend Every valve,Every time..IMO,trying to repair this engine is not something a novice shadetree mechanic should mess with..The damage may be more than just the valves,i have seen cracked pistons due to the valves hitting them hard enough..

Just replace the engine...

IMO,replacing the engine is easier than repairing the damage done from the broken belt...

Especially time wise..

The 94 e-FSM will cover the earlier Maximas engine wise. It has info for both the VG and VE and changing the timing belt on the VG is the same on pretty much every VG.

Hey now, the VG weighs less than 400 lbs. It was the lightest V6 at the time it was made.

The accessories aren't bad though...

I'm not sure if it includes the accessories or not. I know the 84 VG30ET was weighed in at 396 lbs. but I don't know exactly what was all on it. I'm sure the turbo stuff was on there at the very least so ours might be a tiny bit less.

Hey, we should just let the guy change his own timing belt and see if that does something. I changed mine a few years ago by myself, and I have never done it before. I didn't even have an FSM, only the Haynes manual. So, go to it and see what else needs to be done after that. If it doesn't fix it then you have a great excuse to upgrade the internals or swap in a low mileage engine. Good Luck!

it's only a gamble if you have a chance of winning.
if the belt snapped, you bent valves.
You lost, now pay up

if you need a timing belt, i still have the one the car came with that i replaced before it needed it. it probably only has 30k miles on it. you can at least check your compression afterwards..

There is no chance there isn't internal engine damage.

Then its pretty much the same as a broken belt. If you move more then a couple of teeth, valves are done. If you must, before you buy a new water pump put a new belt on and do a compression check. But I still think that is a waste of time... Get a junk yard motor, they will be cheap.

It's unlikely, but if you do not wind up with bent valves get a new tensioner otherwise it will turn around and bite you. The other guys already mentioned the seals and water pump. If your dad is a cert mech then he should know that tho.
