Timing and Idle Adjustment Videos

There was a request for videos and we volunteered to post some up so here they are, I posted them on the timing adjust thread but figured it'd be better in its own thread which can perhaps become a thread where only simple repair videos can be posted and stickied..if enough people want to and have videos

BTW its not mentioned in the video but you SHOULD have your car on NEUTRAL with emergency brake up while adjusting the timing

Idle adjust vid (pardon the language once again)

I need to do this...question though: Timing should be 17-18 PTDC and that would be the best place to set it if I am concerned about milage when I am running 89 octane? Would I get more milage if I adjusted my timing more (and if so how much) if I ran premium. For instance...what are the timing marks?

Milage right now is my main concern...

Well Alex here set mine on 18 degrees but from what I've read here 17 should be the most safetly.. the marks once again | | | | | | | in other words 0 5 10 15 20 25 30 should be a little over 15 not no more than halfway to 20

I run 18deg on 87. Runs great. But when i get here I'm going to run 89.

John- it turned back to 17 when I tightened the dis both times so its not that bad.

Greeny- Premium for a 2deg bump in timing? F that. maybe if I was running 20deg sure. Sounds fun maybe I'll do it.....

Hey Greeny, I run 89 all the time but once in a while usually once a month I will fill up with 92. So for 17 degrees, will it hurt to keep using 89? is it better to use 92? will 92 gimmie more power and mpg with 17 degrees?

If you advance your timing at all,you should use premium to prevent detonation..

Well I dont know about everyone else, but my question now is what is the stock timing (factory recomended) and what timing should we have it set to on premium if we are just going to run that. If we do, will it give us a milage boost?

15 Degrees is stock timing on 3rd gens....

Really, you don't have to advance the timing around what type of fuel you use,all i am saying is you should run premium fuel if you do advance the timing to prevent detonation, not the other way around...

You shouldn't have to turn both if your idle isn't far off of perfect

Your mpg will not decrease nor improve from running premium fuel, like i have already stated, premium will only help prevent detonation due to advanced timing..

lol I never said it would help me improve it (although I thought it would before until you clarified it) , I'm doing it for the detonation prevention but the reason I said lets see how my mpg turns out is because I had a fuel leak just where nForce does but on the other side and I fixed it.

I think mine is at 19-20, should back it down to more like 18 I know. But if I don't use premium there is a slight roughness in idle.

Now I gotta buy a timing gun again.... I donno who I lent it to.

Also I found that I don't get sticky valves on a cold start. Not sure why.

Holy crap, I bought a new gun and checked it. It was retarded at 10! almost 9. I think what happened is when I did some work to throtle body and had to redo the idle I wacked out the timing.

bumping time 2-4 degrees isn't worth but maybe 1 or 2 hp at best and at what cost?..yes free to change it but 2-4 bux at the pump every week or so. now going to syn. oil will give you this and better protection to boot

oh nice vid to show noobs what to do....cool...

Thank you sir, I like things easy for myself so I thought I'd also make it easy for others and help em out. thank xxMarshallxx for requesting the video lol. I encourage some of you to capture on video simple things whenever you have to do something and just post it up for those that dont know how to do it.
