positive cable to battery question

The positive cable that runs to my battery has some weird box on the side of it with 2 smaller wires that run into it. then they go straight to the terminal with the main cord from alt. is that box anythign important or can I cut it and directly connect those 2 wires? theres a pic of it with my old bat:-p

If you do anything with the box, just make sure you solder.
