Yeah, Iron block engine's tend to be a lot hotter than Aluminum Block; a much denser metal. But you can always get some of Aarons Phenolic Intake Spacers

Just look at the temp gauge, thats the direct indicator. Words like "feel" or "seems" dont really indicate anything.

If you're really worried though, check for exhaust leaks that let hot air back into the engine bay.

the gauges read fine but sumtimes when im stopped i smell a mixture between burned oil and rubber
today i opened up the hood and smelled nothing but when the wind blew it felt like someone rolled over with morning breath to my face and i checked under the car and no leaks or anything
maybe im just paranoid

Those smells could be almost anything: another car, toasty rubber from hard driving, a belt may be on too tight, some insects are cooking on your radiator, etc...

The only way to directly determine if your engine is running too hot is to touch the exhaust headers after after the car has been running for a while. Don't forget to use your bare hands, they should only be luke warm, but do be sure to use your whole palm, even both hands if you can. It's the best way, trust me.

Please don't do this.

Seriously though, what is the average temperature of exhaust headers? I touched them once out of curiosity and holy crap I got pwned hard!

Hahahha, "Touched them out of curiosity"!?!?...

I remember I was replacing my transmission linkage bushing at the bottom of the shifter on my VG and I wanted to do it that afternoon/night I got it, so the car was still a bit hot. BADDD Idea, Catalytic converter burned the god out of my forearm.
