help! the maxima won't go into first or second gear until it's been driven for a few miles. on startup, the stick just won't go on the 1-2 side of neutral, but when warm, and if you push it into 1 or 2, it ticks and jerks when accelerating. suggestions? has anyone had this problem? have to go to the girlfriends tonight- hope my friend will let me borrow his '94 mustang GT.

UPDATE: just tested it out again, and there is a clicking noise that varies with RPM. only heard when clutch is out. it is the worst in 1-2 but almost unnoticeable 3-4-5. all the shifts require a little more push on the stick, and when the lever is pushed in neutral from center to the 1-2 position, it clicks before leaving the center N position. Anybody know how much i should expect to get gored out of for this one?

yup yup, You have a failing transmission. The sooner you get it rebuilt the less your gonna spend. Its happened to me before too... Anyways what happened is that your bearings in the trans. have failed and they cause misalignment of the gear clusters, which prevents the selector rods from getting it into gear and/or mismatch of the gears on the input shaft with the gears on the secondary shaft and/or stripped gear(very bad, if you got stripped gears the cost to rebuilt will be much more.). Also you could have a bent selector rod. Anyways I don't know if you know anything about rebuilding trans. so you should probably refer it to a trans. shop. Cost? about $1000-1500. I would have them replace the synchros at the same time. Another option is that you could try finding a used trans. but the VE 5sp. are so rare that they are hard to find and when you find one its about the same price of the rebuild, unless your lucky. Good luck!!

Happened to my 92 SE 5 speed at about 100,000 miles.
Time was not on my side to have it rebuilt and ended up with a new transmission. Was quicker and I know it will run but the $ hurt!

tranny failure

My friend's '92 se blew the five-speed at 140k. I'm sure you can get much more mileage out of a properly cared for 5-spd, but he's big on nascar shifts and rough stickwork. The mechanic said his shift fork broke and sent shrapnel all over the gearbox (this was on the way back to college, he could only get it into third gear, had to drive another 50 miles launching and cruising on the highway in 3rd). He had it rebuilt for about 2 grand (probably way too much). Try changing your fluid first, they say always go with the cheapest fix first.

synch

to my knowledge, reverse is not synchronized. So, one of the other problems discussed in this thread may be the culprit, or you could have another malady.
