well for racing you would want to redline it. shift low for city driving and conserving fuel. i dont know what yours redlines at, i think mine is around 6k. then again i have an auto, so what do i know.

Redline for a 5 is 6500 or a LITTLE above for only about a few thousand rotations, then the engine drops power (rev lmter). Do try to take care of the 5's though. The main shafts have a tendancy to wear out. I had to replace my entire trans within 6 months of buying it. And I wasn't doing any hot rodding, the dude just ripped me! I run RedLine gear oil in mine now and give it hell, but that's me, just be careful. Anyway, I only chirp the wheels in second and third every OTHER day!

Shift at ...

Hi SeR,
According to Max factory manual it's recommended to shift 5 sp. gearbox at approx. 2500 rpm. Also shift at higher rpm if you're climbing a hill and vice versa.
Please note that Japanese engines traditionally have higher redline than American ones, so they "like" higher velocity and "don't like" low rpm.
What about me - I usually shift as described above. The torque is enough to accelerate quite intensively along with the good MPG and negligible shafts wear.
Since I'm not a Formula 1 pilot, I shifted at 4000 rpm only few times. Very impressive as you might know.

Good luck,
DDD

impressive

During city driving, 3K sounds about right, but racing, I'd say about 5 K. My bro has a max (his is a '98 though) and he shifts at 5500 when racing...boy those things rev so freely... Nice engine, but it's slightly bigger/heavier. The design just doesn't do it for me.
