I have already read the sticky provided by Bill and all the other various posts. But the info there is mostly for high performance upgrades (Porterfield, etc).

However, I just wanted to know that for everyday normal driving, are the OEM pads the way to go?

The cheapest I have found the OEM front set for is $46. But aftermarket stuff are as low as $25 (Bendix).

I just want a pad that will not squeak or give off excessive dust.

about all pads give off a lot of dust.. even racer type.. actually racer type pads put out a lot of dust...

just apply brake quite.. on all the pads before you put them on ur car... brake quite have many other terms for it.. juts ask around at ur local auto parts store, it can be called disk brake quite, or something else all it is , is a type of grease or ahdesive that leaves a layer that keeps the pad from skreeeching with the other metal thing behind it.

ummm...well if the proper OEM shims are used you shouldn't get any noise from the pads.
the noise comes from the pads vibrating on the rotor or the caliper itself causing it to make noise.

for normal driving i would go with OEM (not the value one) or the Bendix IQ. they both dust..and the IQ dusts a little more. but it's something you have to get used to if you want quiet brakes. less dust means harder compound...harder compound means harder on the rotor. so there's a trade off. also the harder the compound harder it is to stop when it's cold.

I was going to say the same thing as Dan.. I've used both OEM and Bendix pads, and like them both very well for everyday driving. My bendix made a tad bit more noise than the OEM, but nothing to gripe about.. it was mostly the rears making the noises. both of them don't dust very badly compared to the rest of the stuff out there. (i.e. axxis, EBC)..

the ones I'm using now (Hawk "black") are horrible on dust. I have to clean my rims every 2-3 days to keep them from turning black!

Pads.

If you go oem, get the pads for the fourth gen. they have an identical plate, but have more metal content, and have a cooling slot down the middle.

DanNY. How much is left on your Porterfields? If they have a decent amount left, I am interested to buy them if you want to sell. I want to have my own feel for Porterfields, EBC, Axxis, and OEM 4th Gen. I have new oems. Axxis is underway. Yours could be the third.
e-mail me at work jvandepol@wyman.com

Anyone have used EBC Green Stuff for sale?

Thanks,

John

Thanks Matt & Dan for your input.

I will most likely buy the Bendix pads (MKD430), since they will be $10 cheaper than OEM.

What is the difference in the Bendix IQ line?

Also, I saw some Raybestos (PGD653) pads for $25 at Pep Boys. Are they worth it to put on the Maxima?

I really appreciate your opinion.

To DanNY

Sorry I misread, and mis-extrapolated thinking you were changing the Porterfields for something else.

Thanks for the number and reference.

www.coximport.com Axxis Metal Master pad

I bought my Metal Master pads from this site to help braking power and its virtually dust free. They were cheaper than OEM pads. Last longer too. I e-mailed you about some rims, check your email.

I decided to go with Bendix

After reading the so many various posts on the subject, I went to Advance Auto and got the Bendix IQ set for the front.

I saved $10 over OEM and think they should and will work fine. I have never done a brake job myself and hope that it turns out to be simple as described.

Re: I decided to go with Bendix

Just had OEM front pads put on Sat.
The wear indicator broke off the right front and I did not know it and out of no where I was getting a grinding noise.
Good thing I got it in right away because it was down to the metal. No damage to the rotor. Good thing!

My mechanic said he looked into ceramic pads for my 92SE but did not find them and did not think they were made for my car. I had never heard of them but I guess they are out there and getting more popular. They are more expensive, about $100 bucks he said, but last about 100,000 miles and do not dust. Probably a little bit lighter too.

Just thought someone out there might be interested.
