I think I'm gonna stay
Last couple of months, I've been shopping around with different ideas but I think I'm finally gonna get a Maxima. I toyed around with ideas of bagged trucks, and a hybrid Civic(I was actually thinking of becoming a ricer!!!!)when you think about it, they are extremely impractical and expensive. So I'm on the search for a 92-94 5-spd. Probably a 94. I was leaning toward a 4th gen, but the price and lack of 5-spds is too much for me. So expect a post of a new car in a couple weeks. Plus, smoking a 2001 Mustang(V6) on a highway run with a 89 Max with 160000 on it didn't weigh in on my decision at all. Jk

I've been reading a lot on which intake is better, (the CAI or Pop-Charger). The issue of water in the CAI came up twice and both said that there hasn't been a report of water being a problem. I had the same concern but after some research i don't think that the water issue will be a concern of mine. To answer you question directly, I don't know of anyone who makes that part.

Well, I know for sure that AEM makes them for their CAI, but those are for Honda/Acura. I want a CAI but I live in Texas, so water from the rainstorms is a big issue.

P.S.
I've been through some pretty bad thunderstorm and my CAI has never sucked up any water..

Welcome to the world of searching for those rare 92-94 SE 5spds. I think we're all looking for one of those!
AEM sells bypass valves but they got re-called for some reason a while back. What part of tx are you in?

I'm in Longview, so East Texas, I'm about an hour away from Tyler. I've actually been finding a bunch of 5spds on autotrader.com with low mileage. In comparison to 95-99 5 spds, the 92-94 seem much easier to find.

That's hardly believeable! I spent FOUR MONTHS looking for a VE 5 spd between houston and St Louis. I finalyl found one in July, with 150k miles on it. oh well.. I got it cheap enough that I can afford to rebuild the engine on it. (I've already rebuilt the tranny and installed a new clutch and CAI)..
As for the cAI problem, don't worry about it. I had my front bumper off for the last two weeks, and the filter sticks out in front of the left wheel well inside the bumper cover... with the bumper off, it was exposed to everything that I drove into- including several rainstorms that were so bad I couldn't even see the road! I drove it through about 6" of water- albeit at very slow speeds- but I never had a problem with it sucking in water.. As long as you're not driving through foot-deep puddles, you'll be fine.

Hey Matt, since I'm getting more desperate, I'm also looking at a car (the ONLY car around here
![Frown](https://maxima.org/forums/images/smilies/frown.gif)
I'd have the car checked out first of course, but is there any major fixes coming up with cars of this age/milage? I used to hear that 100k was a magic number for life expectancy. Basically I suppose I'm asking (pleading...?) for any wisdom if this is a good idea or not....
Okay, NOW I go into a corner and cry....

) with 150k equivalent miles (1992 model). Needs some paint work and all 4 wheels refinished/replaced. (You might remember this in an older thread of mine.) Is this a big deal, I mean does your engine need rebuilding, or are you saying "just in case"?

bah, you're all amatuers
. i started looking for a maxima that i could afford that was in good shape for over a year. i started looking before i got my permit. found a few 89-91SE 5 speeds but they didnt run right or had major body damage. then i found exactly 1 92SE 5 speed, test drove it and bought it. i had never specifically looked for a VE powered max, but i ended up with one because it is in good condition and was in my price range. granted i had 2 cars between when i started looking for a max and when i actually got one, but i was still looking for a max while i had those cars.

Personally, I love my VG. I was in the market for a maxima for 11 months before I bought mine. I found many 89-91 5speeds, but they all had 150k+ miles and body damage or rust. I didnt want to get something with that many miles, and all the 92-94s were all GXE's or waaay too expensive. I finally found a 91 5spd, test drove it and loved it. It had 96k on it and with no body damage at all and beautiful super black paint. I didnt really know the difference between a VG and a VE, but I kinda wish I did. I am still happy with my trouble free VG engine and I love the low end power that it has. Im just a turtle above 60 tho

Woah, talk about buddhist monk-like patience! I always get impatient like this and sometimes make bad decisions, but part of the problem is also that in 6+ months of searching I've only come across 2 92-94 5speeds. I'm thinking of test driving this "needs work" one (hey, maybe the mechanicals are sweet), but then someone's got to be there to club me over the head or something to keep me from making an impulse buy!

anyway, wait until you find the perfect car, when you go to test drive it, you'll know its the one, at least thats how it worked for me.
