92 Maxima engine noise
Just purchased a 1992 Maxima SE with 100 K miles, regularly maintained. I am aware of the VTC problem, but there is another noise - intermittent knocking or thumping coming from engine. Want to know if there is some common problem that occurs with this engine, and what to do about it. Help really appreciated---

Hard to say what it could be. Try to pin point it to a specific location in the engine, and when it is occuring (i.e., while driving, idling, turning, etc...) Try checking the O2 sensor, that may cause knocking and poor engine performance. Another problem to be listening for, which is probably not related to the problem you are hearing, is broken manifold bolts on the rear manifold. Very very very common on the 3rd Gen Maximas. It will sound like a sputtering noise coming from the engine. Keep an eye out for that. Try to find some more specifics about the noise you are hearing and more people may be able to help. Later!

Its a fairly big job, definitely not one for an unskilled mechanic. If you can do a clutch job then this is probably close to as much work. It also depends whether or not the bolts have broken off inside the cylinder head, then that needs to be removed and the bolts need to be drilled out. Expect to pay between $600 and $1200 depending on the severity of the job.
