beat a pickup but got a question

hey guys, this was my first race ever. here's the story... I went for a drive tonight because I was just bored outta my mind sitting in my house. So i was just crusin at regular speed, pumpin some mp3s and then this pickup started tailgating me. At first I wasn't in the mood for anything so I figure I'll just let him pass me at the light. The light turned red and this kid pulled up next to me looking at me all cocky. At that point I was like 'aiite, u want a piece of the 4dsc, let's go'. I don't know what pickup it was becasue I don't know american cars that well, esp trucks. I followed him until there's a red light with 2 lanes. I rolled down my windows and he gave me the signal, it was on. To my knowledge, I figure putting my auto into 2nd (right below Drive) would give me a better launch. So i did that plus i turned o/d off. To make the story short, he didn't have a chance from the start. I think launchin from D will beat him anyway. I heard a some wheel spin but I don't know if it was coming from his pickup or my car. I didn't go WOT and didn't feel any huge vibrations either, my launch was pretty smooth... I didn't go WOT thru out because I was ahead already and didn't want to abuse my car further. And when i got to about 50mph I shifted back to D and gave him the brake lights. I don't do this often (putting it to 2nd) to my baby. As a matter of fact, this is like my second time doing this. I tried it this other time because I was curious and I was all alone in this long empty straight-away. Anyway, how much damage does this do to my auto transmission? Let me know wut u think, I know doing what i did to my baby is bad, i just wonna know HOW bad

Re: beat a pickup but got a question

well dude congrats on your run in with the truck. theres alot of rednecks where i live so its not unusual for cocky punks in trucks to try to bring it to the max. usually i deem them not worthy for my time though, ha. anyway, i figure unless you do an n-bomb you wont hurt the tranny. my tranny hold up fine, its been through alot (i learned to drive on it) and its a '90, so unless you try to downshift into second or first or something it wont hurt it. also, i dont think it lets you start from second from a standstill, but when you shift into second it will not shift into thrird from there until you put it in D or overdrive. i ususally never take it out of d unless i want to hold second on back roads for good punch. well my info could be wrong but this is what ive gathered just from driving.

lol, you auto guys crack me up. i'm pretty sure that manual shifting an auto will not hurt it, but i also don't think it makes a difference.

Makes a difference for me. I have a variable intake type system on my VQ that gives me more power at 6500 rpm than at 5600. It opens up at about 5700 and gives me a noticalbe boost, sorta feels like a very small turbo somewhere. Normally the auto changes befor red line, but by manual shifting, I go past redline but not to hit the rev limit @ 7k. This allows me to get into a sweeter rpm in the next gear especially from 1st to 2nd . I get to 80km/hr in 1st.
