Transmission

Transmission

I think i have a transmission problem in my '90 SE and i was wondering if anybody had a clue what was going on. When i shift gears from park to drive, i have to go PAST the D down to the 2 and THEN go to the D, otherwise the car things its in neutral, its like the wire is stretched a little bit or something. Any help would be amazing. Haha, what a funny smiley:

dude...that sucks. as we speak, my tranny is getting rebuilt for $2,032

OUCH!
Holy crap, man. That's more than entire car would cost. Why not just go to a local junkyard and get a used one that works instead? That cost me $600 with labor, and the replacement transmission seems to work just fine.

That was my thread from not too long ago...

The part # is 34552-D4000.

I put my car on jack stands, got underneath the car and removed the bolts holding the catalytic convertor heat sheild on. I wiggled the heat shield off and and you will see the shift linkage toward the driver's side of the car.

My original shifter bushing was completely gone.

I disassembled the linkage, installed the new bushing, put the heat shield back on and I was in business again, in about 20 minutes.


Note: I waited 2 hours for the catalytic convertor to cool.

yeah dude, i know haha. im finding a new place to do it now...the price sucks, but the fact that i wont have a car for a week sucks too

Thanks everyone for helping me, i bought the part and went under th car and put it in. I got a deep cut into my thumb by the edge of the heat plate above the catalytic convertor, but i guess it was worth getting my car running smoothly. Thanks for the help, it works just fine now, and now i have decided that I will be the only one working on my car b/c i found an old rag under the car from where somebody in the past had worked on it. That was the third i have found so far. Stupid mechanics, clean up after yourself!

Now that's exactly why I am proud to be a member of this site. The answers are always posted or no one really crys if someone does not use the search engine first.

I just bought my max swapped in a newer engine and trans and have the same issue, now within 4 mins I found the answer and part#.

93 Automatic Transmission Question

I heard that all 93 automatic transsmisions were defective is that true?

'Cause I have mine down and I want to replace it, but still dont know whats the best option.

Could someone help me.

um. does the air duct from your airbox to your engine snake all over the darn place, or is it a short, mostly straight line?

former is a VG, latter is a VE.

easiest one to start with.. what color are your gauges?
(assuming the car is 100% original...)
white gauges = SE model. DOHC engine.
black gauges = GXE model. SOHC engine.


the 89-91 models had an insanely weak tranny. the 92-94 SOHC was much better, but still on the weak side.the 92-94 DOHC model has the strongest transmission, but unfortuantely isn't (easily) transferrable to a SOHC engine.

I've a question. When I drain all the tranny fluid, are the CV axles supposed to rotate even when the shifter is in "P"? I jacked up the car, took off both wheels, and the left axle seemed to rotate rather freely when I held on to it.

open hood and read if it says 24 valve or not
does it have a distributor?

since you have a GXE, which has an open diff (ie, not a VLSD as you learned about in the 'Tranny-Engine mating question' thread), and since Park just locks the diff casing and not the individual axles, then if you jack it up you can spin the wheels, but the other wheel should be spinning the same speed in the opposite direction.

If your looking to keep that car long term get your transmission rebuilt by a professional. If it cost 2k to rebuild keep the receipt that raises the value of a vg considerably. Make sure you opt for the fluid cooler because its heat that is the biggest enemy of these trannys. I spent $1,800 to rebuild a transmission in a 91 se that i paid $500.00 for. I got $2,300 for the car when I sold it some years later (car was in excellent cond. of course).

You only have one option,save/borrow/get a loan to fix or replace the transmission..

other tranny problems

I have the same problem with the shifter so now I know how to fix that. I have another problem though. Since cold weather set it. On really cold mornings I start driving to work. car will start going just fine then as I get up around 20 to 40 mph its like it just slips out of gear and the engine revs up high. I can put it back into nuetral and back into gear and it will usually start working again. Sometimes takes a couple of times. After driving for about 5 mins it stops doing it. I assume because the tranny has warmed up and what ever it is causing the problem, shrunken seals????? slow moving fluid ???? has returned to normal operation.
Any ideas. As I said this only happens on cold mornings.

yea, i had the same thing happen to e the other day and it scared the hell out of me. I thought the bushing i had JUST put on there had just slipped out or melted AGAIN! Idk what the prob is either,sorry man.

just drop the pan and CHANGE the trans fluid. don't flush it.
if you have a VE, change the screen too, or at least clean it.
