Brakes

Anyone have any opinions on the EBC red/green stuff brake pads? And Also how about the Hawk brake pads?

I'm using non-stock calipers, but I've used Hawk, Wilwood, and will install EBC reds on them this weekend...
I HATED the Hawks... faded after just a few hard stops (from 120-50mph).. but the wilwoods have ZERO fade.. only problem is the dust like a ****..

The EBCs claim not to dust at all, which is completely not true, but the people that have used them love them. I wouldn't recommend the red pads just yet... try a set of the greens, then the reds if the greens don't work for you.. I don't know anyone that uses the reds on the street.. usually green are enough for anything under hard track driving.

I had a set of greens on my car. Great pads. They do dust quite a bit, but they stop so hard your eyeballs will fly out of their sockets I didn't have any problem with them fading, even with frequent autocross action and a few track days. Like any performance pad they won't last very long, right Matt. Mine lasted around 10K miles, but I think I have a calaper in need of a rebuild, one pad on the driver's side calaper was toasted, while the passenger side still had about 1/16-1/8 left.

Hey bro.. I've got a caliper rebuild kit around here somewhere if you need it.. lemme know. cost me about $15 new, and it's still in the box..

Don't know if I'll be able to make it up to KC anytime soon, but I can mail you the kit and the weatherstripping for the trunk if ya want.

Yup.. they're pretty common.. last a long time and very good performance.. they don't dust that bad either, compared to some other brands- but the DO have quite a bit of dust compared to OEM.

Which Hawks were you using? I'm using HP+'s on my RX-7 and they seem to work great. They even did well at the track. (Admittly it was a slower speed track... max speed was probably ~90 - 95mph.)

Thanks,

they were the Black compound..

The RX-7 is a very light car.. Max is a boat compared to them, and I was doing 60-100 through the mountains on hard corners.. after 5-6 hard corners, I was already getting brake fade.. they would also fade after one or two 100-20 stops on the highway..

I switched to the Wilwood "d" compound, and response and fade got MUCH better.. They're a little spongy on the first couple of stops inside the neighborhood in the morning, but I can still easily lock the front tires if I stomp it while cold.. once they get warmed up, it requires very little pedal effort to stop the car like I hit a brick wall.

WOW!! That's amazing, the Black pads work great for most of the RX-7 guys, even running HARD on the track. One other thing besides the weight is that the RX-7 has brake cooling ducts from the front facisa. I've actually considered making some sort of duct for my maxima, but it appears that there are too many supports in the way for it to be practical and easy.

Take care,

if you're looking to just reduce dust then OEM will be the way to go. My EBC greens dusted like no other pad i've used while performance was excellent. my metalmasters don't dust too much but more than stock

hmm, sounds familiar.. I think I've already said all that between the group of responses I've posted above... oh well.. Maybe they'll learn to read someday.. :sigh:

So would axxis and EBC work fine with my stock rotors? My rotors are in great shape but i killed my front left pad somehow. I don't wanna change my rotors yet

Yes either would do fine on stock rotors. You won't see a difference with aftermarket slotted or drilled rotors unless you do some serious track time.
