Broken/Dead Max, electrical?

Howdy guys, my car is dead in a funky way. I have a 94 GXE the battery is new-ish but i am going to get it checked anyway.

Heres the problem:
My car WILL turn over and start, and my headlights do come on. When my car is started the battery light in the lower right corner of the display cluster comes on very dimly.

It is the only thing that does. The gauges do not move from their 'car being off' positions. The power door locks and windows do not move. The clock, and all other dash lights do not come on. Lastly, the car does not come out of gear.

What are some things i can try here for fixign it?

I have nother more detailed thread a ways down about this, but this is the gist. Anything that you could come up with i would be more than excited about to hear of.

THanks much,
Kevin

Get your alternator tested when you test the battery.

The problem there lies in the fact that my car won't move. It won't go out of park. What is your thought concerning this?

The alternator is not charging you battery so there is not enough power for all the stuff like the shift lock. Pull out the alternator and take it to a parts store and have it tested. The alternator itself might be good but it could also be the voltage regulator.

on the Alternator.

If you have a voltage gauge, you can test yourself. Check battery voltage with the engine off. It should be above 12V. If it is below 12, the battery needs to be charged. Next, start the engine, and test battery voltage again. With the engine running it should be around 14V. If it is lower than that, make certain that the battery terminal connections are clean, and tight, and that the ground connection on the engine is clean and tight. If all the connections check out, it is likely the alternator; pull it out and have it tested.

Could have blown one of the fusible links. If you've got a full charge on the battery everything should function until battery voltage drops too low. Engine usually dies before everything else goes dead.

Actually, when 3rd gens have a bad alternator, they will start turning off accessories first (a/c,radio,blower motor, etc.) before the engine finally stops running.

Learn something new every day! I've really been surprised at the way these cars were engineered.

Did the timing belt and waterpump on the daughter's car Saturday. WAY easier than most, actually designed to be serviced. Think I need to get another one.

They are easy to work on, I just did the rear disc brake conversion this weekend and it was not that bad at all. A lot easer then my jaguar.

You can manually put the car in gear by pushing the shift release in front of the shifter
then you can see if the car drives fine

The reason it wont come out of park could just be something wrong with the shift lock

good luck
