Question about a nut.

This will sound dumb, but my shifter fell through the floor in my 92 Maxima, what happened was that the nut that holds the shifter assembly to the rubber "bracket" came off and for the life of me I can not find another one to replace it with.

The closest I could find at Lowes/HomoDepot is a M10 x 2.0 ( I think) but it is just barely too small.

Does anyone know the exact kind of nut I need so I can maybe skip a dozen trips?

Personal Note: My friend gave my '89 Max back to me, and I sold my Ford. So I'm back to all 3rd gens again.

Take the bolt with you to the hardware store, unless it's seized inside the shifter bushing like mine was..

It's seized...badly, already cracked the rubber bracket on one side trying to get it out.

I can take it off my other maxima i guess...but I'd rather not.

Heh,I hear ya,mine completely broke out in the middle,so i fixed it like this..

I used a polyurethane bump stop from a forklift at work, cut it to size, epoxied it to the remainder of the rubber bushing, bolted it to the shifter linkage with a spare bolt/nut.

Better than my solid square tubing bracket mod on my 89 maxima.

<Sorry lost the pic>

I was thinking of zip ties... too

Seriously though. I'll try to shoot some PB on the bolt or just temporarily remove the nut from my black maxima seeing as it is on jack stands awaiting an axle replacement anyways.

There is one thing I do love about working on my cars...I get to drive my Dad's soft volvo around for awhile, until I need my sports cars back that is

It's really both a bracket and a rubber bushing, it holds the shifter in place and smooths the vibrations from the engine.

Over time they just degrade. My 89 max "bushing" got so bad that it fell through and hit the heat shield. My 92 is cracked on one side now but still functional.

If you do attempt a ghetto mod, do one like green posted above.

no offense to your mod green

If your motor runs rough you might feel it in the shifter. But there is another bushing at the end of the link that soaks up most of the vibration. But it made shifting dead accurate. Though, I would not do this if you have broken or worn motor mounts. With the motor rocking around it will break the link somewhere.... This happened to me.
